On this episode of Behind the Score, I'm providing a primer on the church modes...showing how they are related to our major and minor scales. The piece that we're using as a model is my own setting of Variations on Kirken, a set of variations for organ. Organist Tom Marvil guests on the episode as our organist. Enjoy!

The full score is attached to this post.

Great lecture, thank you. While I have a basic knowledge of modes (essentially name and intervallic spacing), the one thing you do (that is illumination) is the concept of tetrachords in their makeup. As a bassist, I tend to look more at scalar forms from a one-line perspective. Use of a (tetra)chordal perspective I suspect is going to give me a more 'holistic' approach to their use when I write music on the keyboard. I have to admit, I liked the piece, as well. It reminded me of when we'd walk 5th Avenue in NYC on Saturday afternoons, pop into the several churches along the way, and hope to catch some of the organists (like Gerre Hancock at St Thomas Episcopal) playing a free program or rehearsing their choirs. Thanks again, Doug. Great stuff.

Thank you, Doug! For me it was like a journey back in time, my aunt played the organ of our church and I spent a lot of time with her at that wonderful organ.

Fascinating piece and informative talk. I'm going to check out the full version and the score. Thanks, Doug!

Great piece! For someone like myself who has very little formal musical theory knowledge it's good to learn about the various modes and how they affect the sound of the music and how they relate to each other. On a lighthearted note you're clearly Prog now as I have only ever heard one previous bass pedal solo (which might be familiar to some fans of Transatlantic) and the only other bass pedal enthusiast I know declines to do one!
