In this episode of Behind the Score, I'm taking you through the Overture to Paulus by Felix Mendelssohn. This oratorio tells the story of Saul/Paul the apostle, through his early railing against followers of Jesus, his conversion, and his evangelism in the years after. The Overture makes use of the German Lutheran hymn Wachet Auf.

We start by taking a look at the hymn's usage by Bach in his BWV 140 Cantata.  Then, we follow along with the score to Mendelssohn's Overture. Stay turned to toward the end to hear how this piece has some personal significance to me. Enjoy!

This was like being back in Music History 201 again. Mendelssohn is pretty special to me, as well, as I played his 4th, the Hebrides Overture, and his Violin Concerto (Joseph Fuchs was the soloist) back in my university orchestra days. Great lecture, Doug, and thank you.

Thank you very much! Now I am looking forward to hear the whole Paulus. I had the opportunity to be part of a performance of Elias. Christian Gerhaher was the bariton soloist. He once sang in this choir as a young man.

I’m with you Peter! I remember playing The Hebrides Overture in High School adapted for all winds which was a challenge! Its been one of my favorite classical pieces ever since. So much fun to play!

Thanks DD - having been a music student in the 1970s and reared on Bach and Handel, this is music to my ears!
