Extended Play Lounge Episode 4 - Poll (Round 1) (Patreon)

This series has become a favorite here on the DD Patreon. Thanks for your participation! For our next episode, our poll will be following the rules we established in the episode 3 poll. There were five options. The winner got the episode (King Crimson). The 2nd place and 3rd place finishers from that poll get included in this poll (Genesis and Haken). And, I pick my best other three options from my current list to round out the new 5 options for this poll.

The wrinkle this time is that we're going to do two rounds of polls...

Round 1 - vote for the band

Round 2 - vote for the album (or extended listen)

This poll is going up on September 3. We'll run this round through September 7. Then, we'll run round 2.

Snow is a great album but I'm not sure it's SB's best. I might recommend a Transatlantic album instead (or any of the Morse/Portnoy collab projects).

I have a suggestion. In order to make things more interesting for you and us, do a reaction to a song and band from your suggestion pile that you select on your own that interests you that you have not heard before. An “R Douglas’ exploration selection”. 😎🤔🧐

I would enjoy The Warning or Rage for Order if Queensryche wins. Although, it doesn't look like it will. If Genesis wins, I think Selling England by the Pound, Trick of the Tail, or Duke would be good listens.

100% agree. I think this is a far superior album to Lamb. I know it is heresy to some, but I think Lamb suffers from too much Peter Gabriel and not enough Tony Banks. Too much style over substance.

I agree with Ron C. every week I place a vote unsure if it was saved or counted. I'm not computer illiterate and on any poll I've ever taken there is a final step to make it final, but there is nothing ever here to do that. Just placing the vote doesn't seem to make sense because I can come back and change it as many times as I want which doesn't seem right. I'm confused so If someone could fill me in on how to make my vote count it would be appreciated

I'm gonna throw in a wild card suggestion here for future consideration, not necessarily for a full album review though that would be very cool indeed: CAN from Cologne, Germany. 'Can' I drum up (ha-ha) some support from the community for CAN? Those of you out there who know them may well suggest Tago Mago as the album of choice but I'm going to nominate Future Days, if only because it may be a little more accessible for newcomers to the crème de la crème of Krautrock (frankly a stupid moniker). CAN were such a massive influence on all sorts of other musicians, from Lou Reed through Echo and the Bunnymen to David Bowie, Brian Eno and Radiohead. And all stops in between. Let's hear it for CAN!

My favorite genesis album is foxtrot but because you already did supper's ready which is a big part of the album then I'd want to see Nursery Cryme or Selling England By The Pound.

I've enjoyed hearing Dr. Doug's analysis of Tony Banks keyboard playing on Genesis tunes, and "Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" is a complete package of their best musicianship (although "Selling England by the Pound" is my fav album). The version with the animation would also make for a good watch, to help explain the trippy storyline: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JszTrQdL314 Since the whole thing is just over an hour and a half, Dr. Doug could be forgiven for wanting to do The Lamb in two separate sessions, IMHO

My favorite studio recording by Genesis is “Foxtrot” also, but “Nursery Cryme” is a close second followed by “A Trick Of The Tail” and “Duke.”

Doug great job on the tunes from snow. I think you will find the whole album is a masretpiece. You should do an interview with Neil Morse too. There is a lot to his back story

aslo putting this out the for the rest of the group. You will find some amazing music on ambrosia’a firstbtowbalbums. Not the commercial ones, but their first two. One last thing, check out crack the sky. Very obscure, but amazing musicianship and songs and an unitique take.

I think the story starts to move too quickly and not in a good way toward the middle of disc 2. Meet some girl, Nick sings a few random songs (in hindsight you can tell Neal was testing those waters here), cram the Ryo keyboard solo from their live act in there somehow. Doesn’t hang together.

Genesis deserves this. Not a big fan of their music but god is it beautiful.

I voted, but my hesitation is that a poll like this leads without doubt to the most well-known band. And of course Genesis stands out. The chance that you know Genesis is bigger than any of the other bands. No surprise here.

Good to see that Genesis will finally make it. The prevoius contender The Lamb was a good choice, but in this format I will vote for A Trick of The Tail. IMO it's their pinnacle, all great songs from start to finish, no filler. Doug please make sure it's on the list.

I don't think Haken is going to make it again XD, but Genesis is also a very good option. For the future (even if it's unlikely) we should consider Frost*. They are a british Neo-Prog band with excellent musicians and I think their album Milliontown would be a great choice for this kind of videos. Or at least we could make a reaction to the title track of the album :D

Hey Doug! I know you did Rush not long ago, but I absolutely loved your reaction to The Garden and think a full listen to Clockwork Angels would be amazing. Not as intricate as some of the earlier stuff, but as you mentioned it is their only "true" full concept album and is a joy to follow the story.

If I may make a suggestion, I think the "original" live version of Rick Wakeman's Journey To The Center of the Earth would make for a really excellent Extended Play Lounge; lots of bombast and the orchestral arrangements are quite fun. The version with Patrick Stewart as narrator is slightly more polished (and, consequently - at least to me, a little less fun of a listen).

I know it's not a full album... but I would love to hear your reaction to The Duke Suite/ The Albert Suite/ I don't know what's it's called from the Genesis album Duke. It's the songs Behind The Lines/ Duchess/ Guide Vocal/ Turn It On Again/ Duke's Travels/ Duke's End. Originally meant to be one long song, they split it across the album because they didn't want people comparing it to Supper's Ready. But, they played it live during the 1980 tour. A listen to the studio tracks or the live tracks would be, frankly, bitchin'.

There was Journey, then Return with Patrick Stewart and later Journey again with Peter Egan and the missing tracks which wouldn't fit on to a vinyl record - agree with go with the first. Those extra 18 minutes don't add a lot

Wakeman is a very good option -- his albums Journey, Six Wives, King Arthur, No Earthly Connection among others are all great listens.

Duke is also magnificent but way less proggy. That’s not to say it’s bad; I love it and have for 35 years. It’s way more accessible but not the really poppy direction they sadly ended in.
