Phil has always been super-forthcoming with his hows and whys. Did you catch the Rick Beato interview where Phil filled everybody in on how he learnt from (I think it was) bouzouki from his Greek background? Transposing a different template over the top of an instrument can bring something surprisingly fresh to the game. If I recall, Dick Dale did pretty much the same thing from bouzouki with Miserlou (original DD name, renamed Misirlou to be in line with the original folk tune). The same sort of principle is applied by Mark Speer of Khruangbin to bring the feel and phrasing of different world music instruments to the guitar. It doesn't have to be fast, but even a slight legato flick here and there puts a real kick of flavour into a line.

Just to let you know what's in my head this morning, Ben. I've been trying to get some of the wacky Ozric Tentacles' "Myriapod" riffs down under my fingers and I can't even get my head to hook into the rhythm. The best I can count is something like "4 beats, 3 beats and a half" like 15/8. It breaks me, but also puts me in mind of your Tubular Bells WW45 where I see the main ostinato as 7/8 with alternating additions of 2 beats. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rn50f0_ErwA Also, super tasty solo. Not flashy, but just so. edit: I figured Myriapod anyway. Each measure of the weird intro rhythm breaks down to what I hear as three bars of 8/4, a single bar of 5/4 then four of 8/4? It's just seems too fast to try and count (3x1+2+3+4+/1x1+2+3/4x1+2+3+4+). There has to be a better way! (I'm probably also wrong on those time sigs, but hey)

That's a classic Zakk Wylde lick except he plays it way too fast
