Improving the Best Alternate Picking Exercise EVER! This is Why You Suck at Guitar 20 with Ben Eller

Downloadable TABS, bonus lessons, backing tracks, and MORE available on my Patreon page! https://www.patreon.com/BenEllerGuitars ! This week you get a bonus episode showing you how to invert this exercise into a descending pattern for maximum picking power gains! I know you're gonna love it! instagram: BenEllerGuitars #thisiswhyyousuckatguitar20 Hey kids! Its your good buddy, Uncle Ben, here with a brand new installment of This is Why You Suck at Guitar!!! In episode 17, we laid the groundwork for alternate picking perfection with the Punisher exercise, and here on episode 20, you're gonna learn another game-changing workout for your right hand: THE FLIPPER! I've taken the classic Paul Gilbert Intense Rock 6 note sequence (the "Paul Gilbert Lick"), and added an odd-note phrase into the middle of it; by doing this, the picking inverts itself, so that way you get the benefits of outside AND inside string changes! Its the total package to help you learn to shred! In this video, i'll show you how to do the exercise, talk about its benefits, and also show you some tricky variations like mixing it up with string skipping for added pick control benefits. We will also about the benefits of playing straight through something that can be perceived as being odd time in order to build a less-picky pick hand! Playing my Suhr Modern White Tiger into the Fractal Axe FX 3. What do YOU suck at?! Let me know in the comments and we will cover it on a future episode of TIWYSAG!

Hey guys, what do you think of using index, ring and pinky instead of index, middle and ring like Ben does? Is there a difference?

Uncle Ben, how would you work in pick slanting, a la Cracking The Code, with this exercise, or with The Punisher? Seems like the CTC pick slanting stuff isn’t really meant to be flipped around with how much time he spent discussing how Yngwie ALWAYS changed strings after an upstroke. Haven’t finished CTC stuff yet (though I have learned more about pick materials , wrist deviation and flexion/extension than I ever wanted to know, lol), but it seems like for most part, pick slanting shouldn’t be flipping and flopping every 20 notes or so...

yeah thats a good question. Ultimately, its all about whatever the LAST picked note on a string is; is it an upstroke? DWPS. Is it a downstroke? UWPS. The true power of the paul gilbert lick is that it forces you to switch both slants RAPIDLY back to back: Down, Up, UWPS down, DWPS up, down, up. Notice the back to back pick slant swaps!
