CNDR Kinetic Element/QRF load out. This is from a series of reference material we captured in prep for the Black Powder Red Earth™ Yemen series. The set up was specced and tuned by an assaulter with over 60 months deployed in combat.

Is there a reason he is only running a kangaroo pouch insert for mags rather than a chest rig?

Jon Chang

In an assaulter role, the goal is to be as slim as possible because how crazy and tight the spaces you may have to navigate getting into and then inside a swelling. You see this with law enforcement as well. Patrol, overland, rural is a different story. Or even in a concealment-react to contact scenario, that's where chest rigs like the D3CR really shine.

Jon Chang

That's also why we went from chest rigs in the original story to slick fronts like you see in Yemen and parts of the Syria arc.

In that vein, I notice he's running two small/medium utility pouches on flanks rather than contact med pouch on 6 o'clock. Is one of those utility pouches IFAK and offset to prevent injury to spine in the event of a fall?

Jon Chang

Both have matching trauma stuff. He's not a medic so he doesn't have the full kit. This dude got his core essentials down to fit in each one of those pouches.

What do they carry as far as admin items (handheld flashlights, multi tools, etc.) and where do they carry them in their kit?

Jon Chang

Headlamps, typically Petzl or Princeton Tec on the helmet or in a pocket. Tools are typically not used unless they are breachers in which case that guy would have a slightly different load out. Given that BPRE is near future fiction, the breachers have more alternative tech(in development but not fielded) for charges (which is fit into a thigh pocket if they have Crye pants or slipped into a pouch on the back - not pictured in this set up).

Jon Chang

An assaulter's mission is very different than a typical SOF mission. Raids are typically complete inside of 2-4 hours(in 2007 - according to the book Task Force Black - tier 1 elements would action 3-4 targets per evening) and at the outset 24 hours. Most of the supplies they need would be cached in vehicles or helicopters. In interviews, we found almost zero instances where an assaulter had to transition to pistol or even reload a primary before a mission was completed.

Jon Chang

Essentially, the assaulter is running as lean as possible so there's the absolute minimum weight of equipment and nothing to impair his maneuver through congested spaces and violent encounters.

Why does he have the electrical tape taped on both ends around the chem lights, and the middle exposed?

Jon Chang

Don't need that much light to indicate the room is clear under NODs or without NVGs. In the dark, the fully exposed chem light will actually throw light/shadows indicating people are in the room.

Weapons aside, can you highlight some of the differences in kit between an assaulter and a sniper/designated marksman?

Jon Chang

Sniper elements would be dudes who could pass for TCNs, running gas guns and civ clothing over slick armor and D3CR-H. They would move light carrying: kestrels, RRS tripods and ballheads, 6-8 mags and the broken down rifle equipped with a RAPTAR, FLIR thermal, Vortex AMG(MRAD reticle), and Surefire can. Maybe a frag on the belt with a Glock and 2 extra mags.

Jon Chang

These dudes are not playable in the current BPRE games as we focus on the assaulter elements.

Jon Chang

Typo. TCN means Third Country Nationals - aka not indig. Meant to type LN ie Local Nationals. Snipes would typically come in as the advance element and get eyes on things from the ground level, augmented by drone coverage.

Jon Chang

IE they would be on deck before the assault and cordon elements arrived.

Dan George

Are the guys running the 14.5"s w/Vortex Razors snipers or just assaulters with longer guns? And if they're just assaulters, are the sniper elements running SR-25s like the Evergreen ones or are they running 16" 5.56s as well?

Anonymous

As far as heavier weapons, we have seen them using fixed M240s and mortars. Do the cordon elements bring things like Mk. 48s and Carl-Gs to the table in case things go wrong? And what nylons do the LNs use?

Anonymous

Is that a RevMedx tourniquet in the back pants pocket? What's the current opinion on them?

Jon Chang

They are the shizzz. Way less painful for someone to have on their body.

Jon Chang

Region dependent. Cordon forces will have some kind of machinegun and rocket launcher. Nylon is the same across the board.

Jon Chang

Assaulters with longer guns and shorter cans :) Sniper elements are, theoretically, running modified SR25s though we never exactly specced one specific as there has been murmuring for sometime now about the army going to .260 Remington which would mean OBRs until the rest of the industry catches up.

Jack Raiden

I decided to subscribe here precisely for that kind of great post! Keep up the great work

Jon Chang

Yep. This one in 18" http://www.larue.com/predatobr-260?sort=popular

I see a lot of obvious Velocity gear, but who makes the small belt mounted pouch with the patches and the smoke grenade pouch?

Jon Chang

Small Belt Mounted Pouch with Patches is G-Code and the smoke grenade pouch and double pistol mag pouch were an Extreme Gear Labs and Velocity Systems respectively.

Anonymous

Huh, interesting. Been seeing so much about 6.5 Creedmoor, didn't realize .260 Remington was a thing.

Jon Chang

Better marketing. Big Army is already buying MGs in .260 Remington.

Anonymous

Oooh, interesting. is there any literature on that?

What is the device (it looks like wire but could be cord) on the belt that the carabiner is attached to called? It Looks like it is meant to allow the carabiner to ride lower allowing the restraints to clear the pouches. But what is it called?

What riser is that Eotech sitting on? LaRue?
