It's such a cerebral Sci-fi, drama. But you're right it is the type of movie that takes multiple viewings really reveal its layers. The director's cut includes an amazingly entertaining, funny, and insightful commentary track between Donnie Darko writer/director Richard Kelly and writer/director Kevin Smith (Clerks, Chasing Amy, Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back) as Richard offers his insight and answers about what the story is about and what's happening.
