I'm just wondering how the hell Cooter walked into this one. I mean, he went from standing around to being goo, the a person, then tentacles, then back to goo. (Presumably)

At a guess... Something was done to Cooter (without his knowledge) prior to his entering the vault. Tentacles are exploding from his body and deactivating the traps. Meaning that whoever enters next won't be harmed. Other than by the smell. And from what we've seen of Cooter, well... The smell can't be THAT much worse.

By the way, I just realized this: Halo has a previously unknown power that might be unrelated to the orbs. The mighty flashback power. Three pages ago she said "Someone queue up the flashback, I need a minute." And bang, the very next page starts the flashback sequence. :)
