Today is International Dog Day!

Pets, such as dogs, have had a supporting impact on the morale of combatants throughout the history of warfare, even if they are not involved directly in combat.

Their special ability to provide focus, comfort, or a welcome distraction in times of stress or boredom are just a few of the many reasons to celebrate them.

In recognition of today, we thought we’d have a look back through the archives at some of the dog and tank-related images that have been photographed over the years.

We also recognise Rifleman Khan, a German Shepherd who won the Dickin medal during the Second World War. He was awarded the medal for saving the life of his handler, Lance Corporal Jimmy Muldoon. Their story is told in the Museum's WW2: War Stories exhibition.
