We don’t endorse smoking at The Tank Museum, but we do endorse learning about tanks, and that’s what’s happening here. The size of the cigarette packet is known, so the calibre of the gun can be calculated later. As this is the muzzle of an IS-3 it will come to 122mm. The photo, one of a series, was taken in November 1956 during the Hungarian Revolution. The turret has been completely blown off and rests upside down in the street several metres from the hull.
