Kevin P. McCaffrey

An excellent, intelligent, and insightful video. I'd say rather brilliant in its analysis of and response to the question. In terms of American WWII engineering (I'm 63, my dad was a captain and doctor during the War in the U.S. Army Medical Corps) Is there an engineering ethos behind the Lee and Sherman and M-18, et al? I don't know. The Sherman was designed to be mass produced, reliable, easily maintained, which may hint at something about the mentality of the engineers behind it, but not being an engineer, I don't know exactly what. I will say that American engineering was at its best in aircraft design and production. The P-51-D (with its British Merlin Engine) ruled the skies over Germany while our Shermans were being demolished by Panthers and Tigers on the ground. The Voight Corsair, the P-38, the P-47, all superior aircraft. Why? Americans, including American engineers, are enamored of speed, of height, of being the highest and fastest and tallest and biggest. Tanks for them too much resemble dinosaurs. Airplanes (remember the Wright Bros.) symbolize best American engineering aspirations, of taking technology to its physical limits.
