The M18 Hellcat perfectly fit the American Army’s Tank Destroyer doctrine during the Second World War. It was a very fast, mobile vehicle equipped with a powerful main gun and extremely thin armour. They would be used as a mobile reserve, rushing to areas where enemy tanks were encountered in order to destroy them.
Tank Destroyers were to be used defensively, even if the Americans were attacking their role was to ambush, but not pursue, enemy tanks.
Incidentally, it’s a myth that American tanks weren’t intended or able to fight enemy tanks and were supposed to leave them to Tank Destroyers. It was part of their role and the crews trained for it.
