This is like 250-300 years before the samurai era ended which was the end of the last shogunate and the emperors power was restored in like 1860s in the meji restoration.

By this time (1600) like 4 years earlier (1596) a Spanish ship had sailed off from the phillipines and landed on the coast of Japan. The Captain was subsequently captured and interrogated and confessed that sending in Christian priests and converting people was a precursor to fully colonizing/taking over the country. Japan then pretty much started going hard after christians. It was called the San Felipe Incident. The previous leader who united the 5 war lords was the leader when it happened in real life. But the show kinda doesnt acknowledge it that much because even the Porteguese priests were kicked out.
