Its the trauma, not just from being poisoned and nearly suffocated in that air ball, but from the previous enemies too. the confusion from the viewer perspective is interesting because it goes to show how animated shows just tend to gloss over the traumas that characters go through. We experience depression and anxiety IRL and we don't even experience a fraction of what Korra did. Another important detail is the poison being metallic (mercury) which if you look at the side effects of fatal dose is shit ton of muscular and nervous system damage as well as plethora of mental health issues.
