John was infuriating and childish with the garderner thing. Hes a lord his word is law even back in England its the same way. She told him Hatomoto is a great honor way back during the swimming scene. So its annoying for me to see him just absolve himself of the blame initially. Also the reason Mariko didnt translate it exactly was because she spared John looking like a fucking fool crying about his garderner dying right before a war is about to pop off. I dont think an explanation would make toranaga look any different at him. John also is more oriented towards freedom, he literally left his kids and didnt think twice about it. Him getting mad at Mariko was again childish to me like wtf is she gonna do go to a lawyer and get a divorce?

Koroda (the guy before the previous Taiko) is based on Oda Nobunaga who lived during the tailend of the sengoku jidai, a 150 year long civil war in Japan. Marikos father was a devout buddhist and at the time Nobunaga was trying to unite the country (which meant fighting and conquering) and one of the most stout and tenacious defenses against him were buddhists monks in their fortress-temples. They also held political power. Oda was cruel towards them and their followers to curtail their influence. But he was also progressive in other ways the previous Taiko (the one we saw dying in episode 2) was peasant who was promoted through his merit all the way to Taiko. This is huge imo because one of the biggest reasons the samurai rebelled when their power was being reduced in the 19th century was because regular people didnt have to bow to them and couldnt just be executed by them anytime they wanted. He was also quite adept at new strategies on the battlefield. He was more open to the world and was open to learning how things work outside Japan. He was a cruel and brutal man but thats not all he was.

Ehh I’d disagree on the John stuff, I think he’s clearly being sarcastic when he says “die” but obviously that gets lost in the language barrier. And you can’t expect him to fully understand the meaning of the titles and customs mariko teaches him when they are completely different from his. Sounds like you’re a John hater 😋 but no he can definitely be frustrating but I get his frustration as well. - John
