March 2022 Reading List! (Patreon)
Content
Hey! Here's your March 2022 reading list!!! I'm hoping to do at least one more in early April before my maternity leave starts so fingers crossed I manage that but here's a bunch of articles and videos in the meantime! As always there's a reading list discussion channel in the discord server if you wanna chat and share your own thoughts about any of these!
Articles
Incredibles 2 - The Other Livvy - a feminist movie review of the Incredibles 2 which someone shared in the discord server. I love the Incredibles but this review did remind me of how frustrated I was with the choice to show in the sequel the lazy awful sexist trope of “mum goes to work, dad is left at home with the kids and is completely incompetent” - thanks I hate it.
The UK’s porn age verification plan is a terrible idea - talked about in the latest episode of Pleasure Trove and more detail here if you want to dive into why it’s baaaadddd.
How Sex Toy Makers Pick Vibrator Colors - the infamous article that says things that hurt my heart like “and yellow, who even likes yellow anyway?” and “Yellow always ranks low in the color preference hierarchy, no matter what you’re selling.” cries in yellow tears...
‘She Was Committed to the Dark Side’ - weird title but this is an article all about Julia Roberts and My Best Friend’s Wedding, an iconic 90s rom-com. It’s about how the movie got made, Julia Roberts’ influence over the movie and ultimately how they made a rom-com where the leading lady didn’t get the guy in the end and certainly didn’t deserve the guy. I re-watched this movie during my awful first trimester so it was fun to read about some of the behind the scenes whilst the story was fresh in my mind.
Too close for comfort: the pitfalls of parasocial relationships - talking about parasocial relationships with the group of people who are financially supporting my work and in return get “access” to more of me is one of my favourite self-aware/meta activities.
Videos
Trauma. Transphobia. And the Internet. (why I left for 2.5 years) - Ash Hardell is back people and obviously as always making beautiful, thought provoking, creative, stunningly edited videos about real important topics. I did not realise going into this hour long video that it would be a series (because Ash has so much to say!!!). Content/trigger warnings are at the beginning of the video, it explores so much. Would recommend.
Commodifying Bi Validation: Loki vs Russell T Davies - this was shared in the discord server and I’m sharing it here now! Thanks for always introducing me to brilliant YouTubers/video essayists Patrons! Loved this video exploring Disney/Marvel’s shitty track record with LGBTQ+ representation and taking a look at Russell T Davies’ work. This video also reminded me how much I loved Torchwood!!! Omg Torchwood!! I was obsessed.
When Your African Mom Declutters Your Closet - Evelyn from the Internets has been creating new character comedy sketches and this one made me chuckle loads.
Hank Green On The Problem With Being a Creator - I will literally eat up anything that combines Hank Green x The Financial Diet x talking about the creator economy. Gimmie gimmie gimmie. Hello, I am a “content licenser”.
Brands I refused to work with: tier ranked - omg sometimes I cannot with Leena’s videos. When she told me she was making this I was like OMMMGGGGGG AN ICON BUT I COULD NEVER, THAT SOUNDS TERRIFYING*.* We do not deserve the videos that Leena manages to pull off.
Ranking the Relationships in LOVE ACTUALLY - another one from Cinema Therapy. I watched this about a month ago and can’t remember if I already shared it but hey this is a very fun video but also with great chats about relationships.
