Episode 9 Further Reading

The ‘rough sex’ defence was a gross perversion of BDSM, I’m delighted it’s finally been banned - Franki Cookney with some wisdom about BDSM.

Daniel Radcliffe Responds to J.K. Rowling’s Tweets on Gender Identity - if you’ve already seen this just a reminder that Harry Potter himself supports trans rights.

ObGyn: Is Science Anti-Transgender? - really great video from Mama Dr Jones about how science and the medical profession believe trans people and support trans rights. Obviously though, still lots of issues within medicine especially around the cost, waiting times and access to hormones/gender-affirming surgery.

Why J.K Rowling Is Wrong About the Phrase ‘People Who Menstruate’ - Kenny Ethan Jones giving us the truth about periods (who has them, who doesn’t) and why the phrase ‘people who menstruate’ doesn’t take away from a cis woman’s experience of periods.

Sex Workers Built Only Fans. Now They Say They’re Getting Kicked Off. - honestly, if Only Fans pulls a tumblr.... I stg.

Protection for Sex Workers - great episode of Good Sex/Bad Sex podcast about sex work and what the current laws in the UK means for sex workers’ safety.

Other stuff

How Velma From Scooby-Doo Made Me Gay - Rowan Ellis has started a new series about how pop culture shapes people’s understanding of their sexuality. Crushes, representation, queer coded villains… And it would seem that a truth universally acknowledged is that everyone fancies Robin Hood (the cartoon fox version).

You’re Wrong About - some Pleasure Trove themed episodes of the podcast You’re Wrong About that I’ve listened to lately.

Roe v. Wade - the history of abortion campaigns in the USA, I believe in this episode they talk about how Norma McCorvey (Jane Roe, in the Roe v. Wade case) later became a anti-choice campaigner but even more recent news came out before she died that she was paid by anti-choice groups to speak against abortion. And once again abortion becomes an economic issue.

Human Trafficking - this whole episode is such a wild ride. It’s US focused and I wish someone would make this episode for the UK because I’ve no idea what the situation is here. They cover so much from domestic labour laws, immigration, sex work (how it’s different from trafficking), and of course moonnneeyyyyyy.

Sex Offenders - a potentially controversial episode but they make lots of compelling arguments about how the current system in the US of the sex offender registry and the legal system around it really is helping no-one and there are better ways to protect potential victims of sex abuse and violence.

Sexting - a reality check on the moral panic around young people sexting.

How I Made Money as a Sex Educator in 2019 - you know I love an income breakdown pie chart! And actually, I just recieved my accounts from last year so will be doing my usual video or maybe newsletter this year (?) going through my revenue stream breakdown. But here’s Cameron Glover’s breakdown as a sex educator!

Why I dislike this flag (is the nhs stealing ours?) - Shaaba made a really great video expressing her thoughts on the Progress Flag being used as a replacement for the LGBTQ+ rainbow flag. This isn’t a debate in which my opinion should be listened to but I found her argument very compelling.

Z, my girlfriend, is trans (M2F), and sometimes she is asked for tampons/pads, so she started carrying some in University for those moments when asked. It is a bit funny that sometimes when she is asked for one by someone who knows she is trans and then realizes it.

Regarding JKR, she is such a massive disaster of a human being. Sadly, her books are enjoyable, but I would expect Z, and I will not rewatch the movies or reread her books. Z has been through a lot of crap throughout her life from family, bullies in school and cliques at work. Fortunately, work bullies, we're crushed by HR, and everything is right there, and when we started dating in school the bullying, stopped.
