YouTube at 15: what happened to some of the platform’s biggest early stars? - when you see the TFD video about ageing on YouTube and my own video response to it (coming soon) you will understand why I found this article so fascinating! Also, I knew Casper had an influencer marketing company and management company but was not aware of this investment company too. Is it basically like a niche investment company for him and his rich friends to “give back”/do something with their money. Very intriguing.
How Do I Stop Caring If People Like Me? - basically, understand that you can’t control how others perceive you and the more you suck up, the less people respect you. Vicious cycle goddamnit. Or you’re actually a dick.
These are the most Googled sex and relationship questions of 2019 - tbh, I’m not sure how they can find out the most searched questions. You can take questions you think are common and input them into Google Trends and see if there’s been an increase in a certain year… Unless Marie Claire have insiders in Google giving them this info. Anyway, it’s a nice lil look at Ghosting, Breadcruming, Gaslighting and relationships with co-workers.
Videos
Why We Love Rich, Terrible Men - Lindsay Ellis on The Financial Diet YouTube channel, she did a whole series of videos on money and pop culture and this one I especially liked. 👏🏼MORE 👏🏼WEALTHY 👏🏼FEMALE 👏🏼SOCIOPATHS 👏🏼
Can you tell if a disabled person is ‘faking’? - from our favourite Jessica Kellgren-Fozard! Talking about Jameela Jamil and EDS.
Why I’m Afraid Of Aging On YouTube: A Rant - I’m doing a video response to this! Stay tuned! So many thoughts and feelings aaahhh!! Would love to know what you think especially re: Chelsea’s first points about older people weighing in on cancel culture online.
How the British royal family makes money - here I am learning things about my own Queen from an American media organisation. Love me some Vox though.
Reclaiming My Old Facetuned Photos - I thought this was a really cool idea from Sierra and I really feel for her when she talks about memories being tainted because she has no original photo of it, only a facetuned one. I have no idea how I managed to escape the desire to change my body in photos but I’m glad there are people like Sierra being honest about doing it in the past, becoming more confident and spreading that positivity.
Watch this BEFORE you QUIT YOUR JOB to take a “break” - love Evelyn so much and yes this video did get me seriously thinking about what it would be like if I took 3 months off… like WHAT IF?!?!
Making a paper shredder that looks like a brain - this was amazing. Simone is amazing.
Podcasts
A Divorce Lawyer On Prenups, Ugly Money Arguments, & What People Don’t Know About Divorce - The Financial Confessions - Dan did lots of driving this weekend just gone so we both were catching up on our own separate podcasts in the car. Loved this episode, definitely a lot of stuff I needed to hear as I’m getting married this year (still feels weird to say, doesn’t feel real).
Ashley C. Ford On Growing Up Poor, Boomers vs Millennials, And Overcoming Your Shame - The Financial Confessions - sorry not sorry there is so much The Financial Diet content in this month’s reading list! Another one I listened to in the car. I follow Ashley C. Ford on Twitter but tbh didn’t know that much about her so this was a really great intro to her life and her work. Loved her honesty at the end about the industry she’s in and the pay disparity.
