I noticed the views on my Marathon video really spiked around May 24th. Why? The rumours that surfaced while I was making the Marathon video came true. Bungie is bringing back the Marathon franchise that made them a success in the 90's. However, this is a "PvP extraction shooter" which means it will not have a single player campaign structure. This has caused many fans to lose interest already.

Set on Tau Ceti IV decades after the events of Marathon 1, when the Pfhor returned and obliterated the human colony AND the Marathon ship they rode in on. The Marathon was a colony ship humans built 300 years earlier out of one of the moons of Mars in order to get to Tau Ceti.

They couldn’t base it on Marathon 2 because the story was retconned in Marathon Infinity and Marathon Infinity concluded with the natural collapse of the universe. Nowhere to go from there. Plus the colony ship Marathon was never in those games. It just served as a 'battle cry' for the surviving human forces. So basing it on Marathon 1's setting was about the only choice.

It honestly doesn’t look like it has much to do with the Marathon trilogy, other than using Bungie's established and respected intellectual property as a backdrop. That could change. Halo changed game categories twice during development, but the new Bungie team seems very invested in this game style. The things that people loved about the original was the story, the atmosphere, the humour that was just below the surface, and the great balance of weapons and enemies. While it's great to see the site of Marathon 1 in modern graphics, I'm not sure if they can recreate those important elements. Bungie promises 'deep-cut' references to the old games, so that will be the most interesting thing.

Colony Ship for Sale, Cheap (sold as-is)

I will probably do a quick follow-up video to cover everything that has happened since I released my last video.

Great post - my sentiments exactly. I await with bated breath. The art stills so far are stellar - I’m not entirely sold on the runner concept however. Ironically it does fit in the Marathon universe, however I don’t actually believe that to be the reason why they were chosen - perhaps todays politics has a little more to do with those choices. Either way - will be interesting to see what happens! *edit* - I guess the biggest spit on the franchise is the apparent lack of MacOS support! (We know why, but would have been nice..)
