What's really kind of amazing to me is the difference between Western Audiences to this work, and Japanese Audiences. This whole series is a fictional account of a very famous period in Japanese history. Every Japanese person knows that Toranaga is Tokugawa Ieyasu, and they know he ends up becoming Shogun. But they also know that Lady Mariko is an historical woman named Gracia Hasegawa, who committed suicide rather than be taken prisoner by the enemies of her Lord. Literally every single Japanese person who has studied their national history at all knew from the very first episode what the fate of Mariko was going to be. All of them. It's only we Westerners who know nothing about the history. And so this comes as a complete surprise to us, where to the Japanese, it's a done deal from the beginning. I guess the cultural equivalent is watching the movie Titanic and not realizing from the beginning that the ship is going to sink, and being hella stunned when it does, because you thought the movie was a love story. Just for clarity sake, and no spoilers to it. Mariko's political trap with her seppuku? Crimson Sky, folks. It was never about an army attacking. It was always about Toranaga getting his allies family members free so that they would be able to support his bid for power. That's why the episode carries the name that it does. So many reactors watch this and miss completely that Yabushige has betrayed Mariko when the shinobi/ninja clan attack begins. They end up cheering for the Shinobi until they get to Mariko's room and realize, "Oh wait, these aren't Toranaga's forces." Kinda like watching Titanic, not realizing the ship sinks, and cheering for the iceberg.
