I gotta say, I love scary stories, I love dramas, and I love the whole family dynamic. This is one of my favorite shows! Loved the reaction!

I am probably one of the least interested in horror from all your subscriptors, and I didn't watch this show when it came out. I hate gore, I hate jump scares, I find the horror genre in general quite repetitive and often just a thin-veiled excuse to see women suffering and/or terrified (obviously, there are exceptions; every genre has its masterpieces, but as much as I'll watch the most mediocre sci-fi and have no regrets, I'd rather watch actual paint dry than a mid horror for the sake of it, is what I'm saying). I share with Blake a love of camp and well deployed tropes and witty dialogue (despite our irreconcilable differences re Star Wars! I generously forgive him for being wrong ;) ) I say all that because I should hate this show as much as he apparently does, but I am actually really enjoying it! I think it's because there's amazing *craftsmanship* in it. And because, as a languages major, all the layers of symbolism and meaning are like catnip. A lot of the time, just feeling the puzzle pieces fit together and the story starting to click and make sense in different dimensions is just a damn pleasure. The storytelling is really masterful. You can attack it from so many angles and find stuff for your brain to chew on: It's a trauma exploration; it's about family dynamics and dysfunction; it's about different responses to abuse; it's the siblings each being one of the five stages of grief; it's actually five different kinds of neurodivergent people; it's the five senses and what they each notice; it's about unearthing past history; it's about realizing your parents are flawed... or it's maybe just ghosts. It reminds me at every turn of that Leo Tolstoy quote: "all happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way". I think part of the difficult time Blake has with it might actually be from having to have a ~reaction~ to it, while I have the luxury to just be analytical about it as an audience. But I hope he can maybe enjoy it from a different angle of seeing how well it's all done!
