A little bit of obscure trivia! So, in 2012, absolute Global Treasure and best man ever Keanu Reeves did a great documentary called Side By Side. In it, he explores the transition between analog film cameras and editing, to digital filming and post-production. The documentary is amazing. He talks to incredible names in the industry: Scorsese, Nolan, Lucas, the Watchowski sisters, Greta Gerwig (when she was still doing indie films), Fincher, Boyle, Peter Jackson, James Cameron... truly the best of the best. Among the people he talks to, there's Anne V. Coates, considered one of the greatesr film editors who ever lived, a true legend of filmmaking. She is responsible for what is considered 'the best film cut of all time', in Lawrence of Arabia, where Lawrence blows on a match and it becomes a rising sun. ...And they paid homage to her by doing a similar cut at the beginning here, with another Lawrence (Fishburne)! You can watch the whole documentary (it's really entertaining and full of info) here, and Anne's part where you can see the cut is at 32:11-34:32. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Lly_iRGVB3U

As for the John Wick franchise itself, my favorite is still #1 because there's more of a streamlined simplicity, and the hints at lore are fun without being so convoluted. In this one, it struck me how much videogames have influenced the purely visual style of filming the action sequences. The tracking through the building from above, the sort of 'leveling-up' of villains and weapons... I'm not sure it works for me, I think movies have a different language. And I also think the lore is getting so complicated it weighs down the plot. But that's just me being a curmudgeon, I actually think the whole franchise is incredibly fun!
