Sure enough the twist is more obvious when you look at it now but keep in mind this was the very first reboot of the turtles after the 80s cartoon and 90s movies so people in the mainstream were more familiar with Shredder being an actual human man. Imagine as a kid seeing this for the first time that they actually decided to make Shredder an Utrom/Kraang alien; it's one of the boldest and strangest choices they've done for the character but I will say alien Shredder was done far better than 2012 Kraang April.

They essentially merged shredder and the Krang to be just one villain in this series. Pretty cool.

He gained a lot of fans that he was even added to the newer IDW comics by his actual name Ch'rell and he became in charge of the Utrom after real Kraang was killed. He may not be Shredder in those comics but at least his character has been added to other TMNT lore.
