Hello Patrons,

I want to share my latest painting: "Nap Time," featuring a sleeping corgi with some chickens! πŸ”πŸ” I originally created this piece last year but never got to finish it since I wasn't happy with the results. So, unfortunately, I don't have the entire breakdown process for this piece, but I want to talk about my thought process of why I changed it. 🧑

Thought Process

When I finished this piece, compositionally, there was something off about it. I couldn't tell what it was, but it was probably the size of the barn, so I left it and put it away for many months since I wasn't happy with the results.

As I was cleaning up my files this month, I decided to return to the painting again. I liked the look of the sleeping corgi and the chickens but knew the background had to change. The barn is the focal point, but I didn't want that, so I enlarged the animals to make them the focal point and moved the corgi to the center. I also decided to switch the barn to a house.

I also changed the colour palette since the other one looked dull and flat. I wanted to create a warm cozy feeling for this piece but also make it look like it’s set in the summertime, so I changed the blues to cyans and greens to more yellow-ish tones. Red becomes the common theme here, so I added some splashes of red in the flowers and used red again to act as a primary colour for the house.

I also added a clothesline just to add some interest in the top area of the painting.

Because I didn't work with a thumbnail and sketch with this piece, finding the right balance for the composition was quite a struggle. I don't like working like this because I spend a lot of time trying to change the painting instead of changing the sketch in the beginning stages.

So lesson learned, always start with a sketch or thumbnails if I'm making a large painting πŸ˜…

With that said, I also started exploring some new concepts and sketches this week. I'm having difficulty liking any of my ideas, so I find doodling helps! I think I will put off the weekly challenge for now and do it in August when I have more time!

Updates:

Your rewards are here! I also got the envelope proof, so I will be picking up the envelopes today! βœ‰οΈβœ‰οΈ

I hope you like the new design! I really love the flowers. I find it funny because whenever I mail out happy mail to the post office, I get a lot of looks and some people ask me if I'm getting married, haha πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Anyways that's all for now! I hope you have a wonderful week!! Thank you all so much for your support! It means so much!

Love always,

Maxine
