Hi fam!

We have another episode of Star Trek TOS today. This week we are watching The City on the Edge of Forever. In this episode, Kirk and Spock go back in time after Bones goes through a time portal that changes the future. In trying to fix what Bones has changed, Kirk falls in love with a woman destined to die. This was such a good episode, with a sad ending for our Captain.

I can't wait to see what you guys have to say about this episode!

Xoxo,

This is my favourite TOS story. (It was also the first one I owned as a fotonovel) It's usually cited as a fan favourite, and is William Shatner's favourite episode as well. The script went through countless rewrites before filming. The original was written by the sci-fi author Harlan Ellison - a man with a huge ego, and known for being intolerant of ALL other writers! Consequently he was furious at the number of other people on the writing staff who made necessary changes in order to get the script into a filmable state (his original version was more like a film script, with a subplot about a drug addict crewmember. This was removed, and replaced by the much more audience-pleasing McCoy storyline). Subsequently, despite coming up with a great storyline, he was never asked to write for the series again. Joan Collins (a British movie actress who is legendary in the UK) played Edith Keeler. She might be recognisable for her leading role in the 80's soap 'Dynasty'. I love Deforest Kelly's performance in this. McCoy has a small but pivotal role, and he really makes the most of it. Yeah, the down-and-out got zapped by the 'kill' setting on McCoys phaser. I always thought that New York was the City in the stories title - but apparently it was meant to represent the city containing the Guardian of Forever...a city which we never really saw, because the studio set was too small! Finally, I know what you're going to point out: "But Ian, how is it that we heard the song "Goodnight Sweetheart" - written by Ray Noble, Jimmy Campbell and Reg Connelly - on the soundtrack, when this song was written in 1931 despite the fact that this story took place the year before??" An excellent question Alexxa! I have no answer - unless the Guardian of Forever somehow manipulated time..?

Omg! I knew she was familiar! Joan Collins, of course! My mom was OBSESSED with Dynasty (In French of course 🤣). This episode was so good! I cant wait to start SEASON 2 this upcoming weekend! As for that last question, I was totally asking myself that 🤷🏾‍♀️😅 Great tidbit though! Now, I'm off into the Google rabbit hole! 💛
