It's getting late in the calendar year, which means an increasingly-relevant tradition is primed to take place: Geoff Keighley's annual Game Awards (which we once knew as the VGAs back when). The show itself doesn't take place until early December; thus, we thought we'd take some time to prepare ourselves for some potential outcomes, mixing through some (but not all) of the categories in order to pass judgment. Sacred Symbols' audience knows that the three of us don't really care about The Game Awards, apart from the various announcements that come between the winners being announced. But it's still a cultural event worth taking note of... even if we're concerned that some judges don't know the definitions of words like "independent" and "adventure game." C'est la vie.

I don't agree with RE4 as a GOTY nominee. It's a fantastic game, but I think that remasters/reboots are so common now (and not stopping anytime soon) that we should just have a "Best Re-Imagining" category.

Dead Space just has a more bad ass attitude and self awareness. Resident evil 2 was the pinnacle remake and there’s nothing wrong with the rest. Dead Space also has the benefit of a phoenix type story. The company was shut down and it’s back!

I get that action-adventure is a lame term that, like RPGs, encompasses many types of games. But I don't think it's that hard to define for anyone who's a fan of this medium. Adventure games are puzzle games, action adventure games are action games with puzzles. Uncharted, Lego games, Zelda games, resident evil are all action-adventure games.

I still find it weird how people view Tears of the Kingdom for the Game Awards now. It improves on Breath of the Wild in every aspect and was the most adored games for months this year. Breath of the Wild was recently awarded the greatest game of all time in an industry wide poll at the beginning of the year. It kinda shows how much recency bias affects people when voting for award shows. I hope it gets the recognition it deserves. The crowning achievement in the best year for gaming.
