Hipsters, Homesickness, Social Media Usage, The Best Gaming Controller | Constellation, Episode 36

It's time for Constellation! This week, Punching Up co-hosts Gene Park and Micah Watson join the Brothers Moriarty for Last Stand's conversational podcast. As usual, topics are varied. Micah wants to discuss homesickness, how it's affected us in the past, and whether we long to go back to where we come from. (Naturally, such a personal topic veers widely into parallel conversations.) Gene chronicles his years of social media activity, and wonders whether such wide exposure has been a net positive or negative for us as individuals, and for the greater whole. Dagan has a bone to pick with hipsters... or does he? After all, what does the word even mean? What does such a connotation say about a person? Is it an insult, a compliment, or perhaps a misnomer entirely? Finally, Colin caps things off with some light fare: The best gaming controller. Which input device from the annals of history speaks to us most? Funnily enough, we have four entirely separate answers to share.

There's a book by Johan Hari called "Stolen Focus - Why you can't pay attention and how to think deeply again." that touches a lot of Social Media/smart phone usage and how they have impacted how our brains work. Recommend for anyone interested in Genes topic.

The Xbox 360 controller is the pocket pussy of the controller world - Gene Park 🤣

There's a great instrumental track by Blut Own called Hiraeth which is a word used by the Welsh to mean a specific homesickness that they feel when away from their lands. It's a beautiful short Future Garage track that I think you guys might enjoy if you ever want to reflect on what it means to be home. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9IWVq0hwyU

Am I a hipster for playing elden ring and hating every single second of it and it took me 80 hours to beat. Prolly my game of the year that year

Tom Gentry

I’m dying at Colin repeatedly talking like a hipster compulsively while denying all accusations of being a hipster.

Shouts out Micah for injecting levity into Colin’s overly defensive tirades. It makes those sections easier to get through

Is there ANY upside to Guam? Even visiting?

Just here for a wellness check on Colin. Making sure our boy hasn't done anything drastic like rip out his left Achilles and ship it to the Meadowlands.

I really enjoy the banter between Micah and Colin. She knows how to use great counter arguments to Colin's gatekeeping. Many times in the past I thought about not writing a question in since I know how serious Colin takes grammar. Many times he came off as a gatekeeper to use the English language properly when it comes to writing. Part of me thought if I should have ChatGPT look over my questions before submitting just to make sure it's written out correctly lol.

Yeah, as Gene says, "hipsters" as it relates to any kind of relevant counter-culture, haven't been relevant in over a decade (outside of SF/Portland). It's sort of analogous to "metro-sexual" for example. Not to say they don't exist, but they are a rarity, I think. At least among young people... I think it's more of a millennial generation movement.

I feel like you guys are all right on with your hipster takes. I always associate hipsters with an air of unearned superiority.

Just like Colin and Gene said that they grew up in the perfect time of social media and how it was unavoidable in almost every facet of life. My upbringing (both time and place) made it nearly impossible to not be a hipster. I was born in 1992 and grew up in South Orange County, California. IYKYK. Gene lived here so he may know what I’m talking about, but from what I understand he was more in North OC, which is a bit different unless you’re talking about Newport Beach, it still applies. All everyone does here under the age of 40 is compare themselves to one another. Beautiful place I love it here, but it is pretentious. Not in my circles but you still see it out in public. The way people drive, the way people converse on the streets. It’s definitely something in the air. But in your teens and 20s you had be a hipster in someway if you wanted to find a friend group or date anyone. Just to flat out be noticed by anyone you kinda just went along with the hip “thing”. I get that a lot of it had to do with my crowd of friends that I was with too. We were all always trying to find the new music before anyone else. Or new clothes. I dunno it felt genuine at the time so I can’t really say? I’m still here in San Clemente at 31 married with a kid on the way, I still drink IPA

I'm having a really hard time getting into Starfield as a direct result of being consumed by Baldurs Gate for nearly 50 hours... the quality of the writing, voice acting, and even presentation is just next level!

How about them Jets

I feel like there is just a huge misunderstanding of what a hipster is with everyone on this episode except for Micah. A hipster is the "I liked it before it was popular or cool" person. So Micah's superiority point stands with that.

It makes me happy to see Gene representing Cal State Fullerton and all things Orange County. Go Titans!

The worse controller was the Colecovision controller. N64 controller was a dream compared to that thing.

Colin, you can kiss my ass with the Fandom thing. As a Raiders fan living on the East coast you think they're showing their garbage asses on TV? I'm deff not paying $500 for Sunday ticket because I can't afford it. So I'm not a fan at all because of that? Get the fuck outta here with that bull shit bro lol I think my 25+ years of suffering are enough

TheMuff1nMon

Why isn't the audio version live?
