Gran Turismo (film) Review Discussion and Spoilercast | Sacred Symbols+, Episode 328

It wasn't entirely clear how PlayStation Productions would or even could execute on a watchable, interesting, and quality film rendition of Gran Turismo. After all, the license was first optioned more than a decade ago to no avail. But by leaning on a compelling plot rooted in the deep history of GT and its emphasis on realism, the powers-that-be made the undoable doable. The Gran Turismo movie tells the tale of a gamer-turned-racer named Jann Mardenborough, a dedicated series player who was shepherded through the now-defunct GT Academy, making his far-fetched dream to race real-life cars a reality. And it stars some notable names, including Orlando Bloom and David Harbour (and Ginger Spice!). While it can sometimes come off as somewhat advertorial, Gran Turismo's excessive 'car porn' will nonetheless be enough to keep many people engaged. But in fact, the movie's themes go several levels deeper by asking a simple question: What could you achieve if you were actually given the opportunity to chase your destiny?

Do the spoilers start from the beginning or is there a mention when spoilers begin? I am unsure whether I want to go and see this so it’d be good to know everyone’s thoughts without spoilers!

"The 'Ratchet and Clank' Problem". You mean character relationships having an arc?

Mateusz Kuklinski

Good episode, however, my only gripe is the way Micah pronounced Shippuden. That was criminal.

No thanks.

Hey Colin, not sure if the amount of advertisements is different for each movie theatre chain but I’ve been to AMC Theatre’s enough times to know their ads are about 20 mins before each movie. It sounds like it was a similar length of ads for you too.

Fun fact: the mom is Geri Halliwell (aka Ginger Spice), better known in the racing community as Red Bull F1 team principal Christian Horner’s wife.

Micah, if you’re interested in checking out other racing media, you may like Drive to Survive on Netflix. It single-handedly turned F1 into a prime time American sport.

Good conversation, crew. I had no plans to see the film, so I listened to the entirety of the episode. I currently still have no plans to see the film.

There was a book written by Ernest Cline (Ready Player One) that wrote a book that is like teach kids that play games to fly ships it ls called Armada. It's really good story is cool AF.

Doug, just Doug

Saw the movie on Friday… totally agree with Dagan. I said to my wife this movie has no business being as good as it is. Thoroughly enjoyed it. One “Easter egg” I enjoyed was how they had the leaves kicking up on one of the tracks, just like in one of the games (back then, this graphical effect seemed impressive!). Finally, as a lifelong Raiders fan, I appreciate Michah’s shoutout to the team. But I do have to disagree… basement-dwelling Madden players definitely could play for the team. 😂
