Square Enix has paved the way to a revitalization in pixel art games thanks to their HD-2D art style. The first title to debut with this 2D/3D blend was none other than Octopath Traveler and, today, Matty and Micah dive deep into its sequel. From the individual character arcs to how they intertwine, we get into our personal favorite and least favorites alongside the massive leap in quality from the first game to the second. As always, we begin in non-spoiler fashion and then get into the nitty gritty in the second half of the show!

I’d love to listen but I’m still making my way through Octopath 1… can’t wait to start the second one

The game is gorgeous. Several times I had to stop and admire it.

Loved Octopath 2, put 90 hours into it. But damn, I was pissed at the end when the game suddenly just lets you change out your whole party in the menus. Why on earth couldn't you just do that the whole time?

I thought the difficulty was perfect! I never had to grind for levels but was definitely forced to maximize the value of armor/abilities. I probably did 80% of the side content. Haven’t fought the post game boss so I might have to grind for that 😂

Agree with Micah. 1 is better than 2 overall. Grinding is still an issue in the game but not as bad as 1. It’s telling that both of you guys had to use a guide to make it through. I’d say this is the biggest weakness of the series overall. If they don’t want to balance it, that’s fine but then maybe add an easy mode for people who don’t want to spend a long time on some crazy bosses. 😅
