Hey, everyone!

Micah and I (Matty) will be sitting down this week to discuss all things Octopath Traveler II in a spoilercast/review discussion. That's where you come in!

We want all your questions in both spoiler and non-spoiler fashion. Whether it is about the respective paths in the game, the end game content, or merely the secrets tucked away in its vast, pixel-filled world, please do fire away!

Hey guys, While I love OT2, I was still disappointed that different characters didn't appear in eachothers stories at all really, they would just disappear until a battle occurs. While the banter between scenes helps, it doesn't really address the critism that was levied at the first game. Brógán

Hey guys, Which way do you like to play? Recruit a team of 4, and stick with them or recruit all 8 and switch them out. I personally much prefer have two separate teams from a gameplay and narrative perspective. Thanks, Brógán

Hey Double M, I spent a good 50 hours loving my time exploring and grinding in the world of Octopath Traveler II. But despite how much better I find it than the first, I still find myself having the same problem- the story and the cast. Some of the stories were decent, but I still didn’t feel like it was enough. Do you two agree? If so what do you think is the missing ingredient here? Personally I think it needs to be a little more linear with a set protagonist, but I suppose that defeats the purpose of these games. Thanks!

Hey Micah and Matty, I have a really simple question. The final chapter bosses for each character all ramp up with a difficulty spike but also are some of the most dynamic and tactical battles I’ve ever played in a JRPG. I’d like to know which of the end chapter bosses you had the most difficult time with and which one was your favourite fight. What strategies did you use to take down these big baddies? Thank so much for all you do!

Hi Matty & Micah! ** Considering the "vignette" style story structure, how did you feel about the fact you couldn't change your party leader? I can't quite think of a reason why the developers didn't allow you to rotate the full cast of characters to keep their levels more closely aligned. Was this an issue for you, or did you not mind either way? And, did you like your Party Leader? I chose Hikari, who became my favorite character, so I feel I lucked out. If it was one of the cast I didn't really like so much (sorry Agnea) then I may have dropped off the game or even restarted. Thanks, Darren **Call me Darren not my username if possible!

Good day peeps Who had the weakest story and why was it the dancer (I already forgot her name)?

WhatDarrenPlays

Hi Matty & Micah! ** Did you find any absurdly "OP" equipment, playstyles or items in the game? From playing I picked up the Inventors Interchangeable Catapult who I assigned it to Hikari. I found it so OP being able to select the weapon type it used and target all enemies that often I was wiping the battlefield in the first turn in areas that were my level or even slightly above. I found myself reserving using it for times I was struggling, as it became too easy. Did you find anything else that seemed imbalanced or wildly powerful? Thanks, Darren **Call me Darren not my username if possible!

So, this is a quest about Square in general. It seems that with their HD-2D games, like Octopath II and Live A Live, they are much more strict when it comes to videos and music being up on platforms like YouTube. Do you think that this has overall hurt their marketing and ultimately the sales of these titles, leading to less of these types of games being made in the future? I ask this because from the get-go with Octopath I being announced back at the Switch launch event, I always saw Chrono Trigger, even with its licensing issues, being the ultimate usage of this engine.

M & M, As an avid classic JRPG fan, this game scratched so many much needed itches for me. However, after experiencing the end game I was left wanting in such a large way. I ADORED the ability to swap actively between all 8 party members, and felt like this is how this game is meant to be played. I wish they hadn’t limited that mechanic to just my last few hours with the experience because it was one of the more unique elements. If we are lucky enough to get a third installment, would you want to see more of this as well? Are there any other unique mechanics you’d want to see expanded? Thanks for all the amazing content! Cheers, Will S

Greetings “We’re in the same party, but we don’t talk often” duo. How did you feel about the more dynamic nature of Octopath 2’s camera? While in many ways I see the second game as an improvement, there were points were I felt that the sweeping camera (especially in combat) actually detracted from the overall feel of the game.

Hey guys, I have been very interested in checking out the Octopath series. The art, style and music all are extremely attractive to my interests, but here's my conundrum. I feel like 90% of the time that I get invested in an RPG like this, I hit a point where I somehow did not grind enough, even though I didn't skip any fights and intentionally tried to scale my team a few levels before moving to the next area, and it always kills all momentum and enjoyment I had in the game to have to stop and grind EVEN more in order to progress. Like suddenly I'll reach a boss fight that I'm severely underleveled for, even though I had no issues leading all the way up to that boss. I heard Micah mention this as a complaint for Octopath 2. I was curious if you guys could elaborate on this any. I don't want to waste my time/money if the game is going to screw me over at some point in the long journey through the story. Thank you!

Hey M+M, Although I really enjoyed my play through of OT2, the art style, battle system, totally customizable builds for each character all being highlights, I was wondering if you guys experienced any of the same gripes I did during your play throughs? Firstly, having each characters story chapters progress at the same levels sort of took the challenge away imo. Especially considering Temenos was one of my first party members, his final ability was 1-2 hitting final bosses. I know level scaling is a point of contention in RPGs but at some point fighting the lvl 45 bosses with lvl 70+ characters just kind of broke the immersion. And this is without very much grinding, I think I finished my play through at 75ish hrs. Lastly, I feel like being able to find the class guilds before the corresponding characters took away from the fun of enlisting new party members. Aside from the unique ability they each have, knowing/already having all their class skills before they join your party just ruins the fun of discovering a new characters skill set. Thanks and sorry for the ramble, excited to hear your thoughts the game!

Let’s go!! M&M, so stoked y’all are doing this spoiler cast. Was a truly exceptional game. How did y’all feel about that ending? I know we all aren’t super satisfied with how stories intertwine in the early goings, but how it is brought together in the end I found to be masterful. Less controversial is the music and graphics… wow.. HD-2D I want straight pumped into my veins. I’m pumped for the Dragon Quest 3 remake now, for instance, but want to see non-Square Enix studios take a stab at this style as well. What studios would you want to see attempt it? Imagine the next Pokémon remake (Black/White) being in HD-2D? Probably not something you think about… but boy do I! Cheers and hope y’all have a wonderful pod, Aidan

Thank you both so much for doing a spoilercast on this game! I loved Octopath 1 and feel that Octopath 2 only continued to improve upon the modern turn-based formula that Bravely Default started. This may be my favorite JRPG since Final Fantasy 12! My question is simple, who turned out to be your favorite and least favorite characters to have in your party?

towtansua

I feel like on paper this game is everything I want in a game, but in real life too much of a slog. Maybe it's good that the combat system forces you to think about weaknesses, but I enjoy a good old fashioned thoughtless grind like in a dragon quest or an old final fantasy. still, i would love to see an endless supply of games in this art style, like FF6 or those DQ games. what's your wishlist for using this 2DHD in the future?

Sean Mason

Hey M & M, I enjoyed Octopath 2 so much that it jumped into my top five games of all time. From the heartwarming vignettes to the stellar combat system, I enjoyed every minute I spent with this game. Each of the eight traveler's stories touched me in a deeply personal way to the point I found myself tearing up during Throne, Osvald, and Castti's stories. With all that said, did any moment in the game make you tear up? Best, Sean Mason

Daidoji Reiji

M and M, I will keep this somewhat short and sweet. I know Micah has said on Punching Up that she feels like the game is a slog and that the party interactions are not really there, but I feel like with the side missions and skits the party interacts as much as any old SNES era RPG. That being said, I thought this game did that much better than Octopath 1. Even the character stories were a step up from the first game. So. what would you two like to see changed the most in the inevitable Octopath 3? Thanks and keep on collecting that BP yall.

Hey Mister Mom, did you guys tackle the optional superboss? If not, did any of the bosses in the game give you any trouble? Thanks and remember not to let the bitter cold extinguish the flames in your breasts.

Hello my Octopath Orators! I haven't played Octopath Traveler II yet, but I love the original, and one of the absolute best pieces of the puzzle is the soundtrack. Some of the most beautiful music ever featured in a video game comes from the original Octopath. My question is this: did the original's soundtrack hit you as hard as it hit me, and does the sequel's soundtrack stand up in comparison? Thanks, and have a good show.

Now that you’ve finished 2, did you like it better than 1? I prefer 1 for its characters and stories but upon returning to play it, I found it almost unplayable due to not being able to speed up battles like you can in 2.

Hello Pathers, I'm excited to for this podcast because I adored this game and have the platinum trophy to prove it. I found the character interactions and unification of their purposes superior to the original. Question: Did either of you beat the secret ultimate boss? I have mixed feelings on the battle because the entirety of the game wasn't too challenging but the ultimate boss transcended into the realm of "absurdity" for me. I had to ditch the traditional rules for success I've learned through thirty years of JRPGs, instead using the job and skill systems to completely break the game, as well as grind out an extra fifteen levels or so, ending around level 70-75 for all my characters. I appreciate the depth of the systems and customization Octopath II allows, but the change in how the battle fundamentally needed to be approached still elicits mixed feelings from me. I'd love to hear your thoughts. Be well and keep traveling. Clark Petri

What do you think about the game design that allows you to speed up battle instead of making the battle system fun without that. A lot of square enix jrpgs do that and they get praise but I feel they just need to either make the battles more fun, faster or design the turn base combat in a manner that you wont need to do that. what do you think about features like that?

Good morrow Duopath Podcasters, I have some, what I would call odd thoughts on Octopath II and honestly I enjoy it but it's lacking in what would make any sequel great. It doesn't do enough new. There's some QoL improvements in gameplay but not enough in other places. For example I am one of the brave few who achieved 100% achievements on Octopath 1 on Xbox and while going through the laborious task of all weakness discovered on all enemies, all treasures and hidden items; all I kept asking why the fuck isn't there a codex or bestiary that I can see what monsters I missed or what areas I'm missing chest or items. I restarted because of missable monsters and had to reencounter and rediscover ALL weaknesses again. Yes and I feel this could have been avoided by just IDK INCLUDING A FUCKING X/X counter on each area or a bestiary to see what monsters I am actually missing instead of deducing it using a fucking spreadsheet. How does Octopath 2 not include this shit?! Wild. I enjoy how Octopath chooses to tell it's narrative and I think all the stories are fine but I felt easily disengaged because of long & uninteresting cutscenes that I ended up looking at my phone during. The crossover stories need to be more in-depth or the entire games story needs to crossover, I don't think I can do another game where it's narrative is to the T the same as I and II. But again I do still like the game, maybe it hasn't been long enough since I played Octopath 1 because I played it on Xbox because I don't have a Switch. The trophy list for 2 is also MUCH easier and doesn't require all chest and monsters. But I wouldn't mind doing that stuff if the game made it easy for me to track that progression in game. Am I right of have I been travelling on the road too long? Signed A weary Traveler

Hey there Micah and Matty! Did you guys play the game in English or Japanese? Did you guys alternate? Or do you have a particular favourite voice in each language? What language do you guys play JRPGs usually? And what JRPGs do you actually prefer in EN or JP? Thank you as always and keep on, keeping on!

BMJ614

Hey M and M I have yet to do a makeshift challenge I call Catch All The Great Beasts. It Involves capturing all the boss/bonus boss monsters with Ochette. Have you've done this or any other makeshift challenge that would be worth an trophy/achievement but the developers didn't put it in cause it would be too absurdly hard? (It could be an easy one also) And as always STAND DOWN from F'n that chicken (Oops wrong show)😉

Maxi Lopez

Tell Colin he's a scrub for not finishing this game.

Hey guuuuys! I never played the first game knowing it wasn’t connected at all to the sequel. So when I started this game, I was all in!!! But as I passed the 40 hour mark, I had enough and put it down for good. I feel like this game and others like this could be SO MUCH better if it was shorter. Maybe a solid 30-40 hour. I looked online and it takes about 60 hours to complete and 80 hours for all side quests. Why? WHY? What are your thoughts on the games length?! Ps: love everything LSM does ❤️

Will_Gear

Hi Micah and Matt, I really love OT2, however, I took a break after getting stuck at a boss for likely not grinding enough. The music, stories, visuals, and gameplay are all top tier, but the grinding may keep me away for a bit longer. Would be interested to hear your thoughts as a whole on the game.

Barzenak

I played a lot of the original and picked up Octopath II. I just have so many great games right now I do not know when I will get to it. I had a great guide for Octopath 1 and I hope they make one for II. I still love my hard-cover guides but getting harder to find them nowadays.

The Snacksquatch

Hey guys, With square killing it with these beautiful 2D HD games, what would you like to see next? We got livealive remade and We know of a dragon quest remake being done in this style. What would your personal picks be? Thanks for all you do.

The Great Santini

Yo! Octopath vs Triangle Strategy? Which do you like more? I've personally only played Triangle Strategy and I was very pleasantly surprised by it.
