Hear the Magic in Your Sighs | Sacred Symbols, Episode 254

A minor culling is underway at and around PlayStation, with a smaller first party studio going away and an in-production second party FPS seemingly cancelled. But it's unclear why this would necessarily be looked at as a bad thing. If teams and products aren't living up to their promise -- and if they presumably don't reach an ever-increasing quality bar internally -- shouldn't they be cut loose? Still, at a time when consolidation and headcount means anything, that Sony is taking these risks indicates there's more at play, with the potential of a brighter future on the other side. Let's discuss. Other news this week includes massive numbers for the Horizon franchise, now Sony's sixth best-selling series ever, while Pokémon studio GameFreak gets into bed with Take Two and PS+ gets its strongest slate of new additions in months. Finally, we wrap things up -- as always -- with listener inquiries. Was IGN wrong to say that games its staff has never heard of aren't worth your attention to begin with? Have the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters invoked a new interest in Stranger of Paradise? Can anything be done to halt the death of game rentals? Will we ever recover from how hard The Good Doctor makes us laugh? Zelda day and sacred symbols. Gonna be a good weekend.

JoshM

The Destiny Silver situation is kinda weird, and I think Dustin's comparison is good, though I think it should be noted Fortnite's battle pass is all cosmetic items, whereas Destiny has a season pass costing a similar amount, and contains a battle pass on top of a set of story/endgame content, like a mini DLC. And with the cost, whilst you have to spend more on Silver than its worth for the initial purchase, for the next few seasons you would pay the usual since you'd have leftover from that first purchase. Not a great look nonetheless though, especially with all the other technical issues lately - definitely has been rocky since the launch of Lightfall!

4 hours of pure sacredness 🍆

Mike D

Firewatch and The Last Guardian????

Deemac

Rumours are that the 3 people Colin alluded to being in the new Mortal Kombat are: Jim Ryan, Phil Spencer and Reggie

Jonathan Turner

I just had to look up a Killzone 2 walkthrough, been years since I played it. And now cannot unsee what colin pointed out.

Walker Simmons

This was the best intro yet. Talking about Chris Chan and The Good Doctor back to back 🔥💦

Michael Thew

Well GQ can knock the 100th game off because it seems as the new Zelda is better than BoTW

iain mcmanus

colin said old chris and i think he was talking about chris chan and chris ray gun thought he was talking about him and then colin true to form just didnt explain it lmao 1:55:41 actualluy he does say chris chan just before but no one acknowledges it

Luke Silletta

If Netherealms next game is Mortal Kombat than that is a ding against the Nvidia leak. The leak says it should be an Injustice game.

LET'S GOOOOO

If Horizon is as good as Colin says beat the DLC.

Derek Alcott

Be careful sleeping with contacts. I've scratched my cornea.

To be fair, Ed Boon said “…we never konfirmed” which probably means it really is true.

Ryan

I think the art style of horizon is hideous, the character designs are horrible, bullet sponge dinos, boring writing, heavy feeling movement and awful Ubisoft style game design. I find the game super unappealing. It doesn’t surprise me that very few people actually love it despite it being an amazing technical achievement. elden ring, breath of the wild and Jedi survivor have so much more heart to them. Art is subjective and horizon is a very unappealing piece of art to me. Every time I see sci fi Indians I cringe hard.

Will_Gear

I think with Metal Gear Solid 4, you have to absolutely cherish Metal Gear as a whole to really appreciate it. I personally loved 4, even though I was aware of its cutscenes and lack of focused gameplay. It’s certainly not for everyone, but the story is spectacular, especially with the bosses. It’s an incredibly deep and sad game in a lot of ways. It also has an incredible start screen.

Will_Gear

I thought I was the only one that felt this way. I think the characters look like someone got a little too silly in a character creator. I just don’t understand Horizons aesthetic at all from that point of view.

Ryan

It’s a well made game that people don’t actually care about. Nobody is combing through horizon lore. That’s why nobody is buying burning shore.

Damon Ransom

Chris that's such a weird thing to say about fallen order, you put it down so long ago and think the final fight is gonna be easy when you pick it back up? lol

Gaming itself is NO LONGER an expensive hobby as a rule. For $400 or less you can get a laptop that will run basically any game made before 2010 plus thousands of indie games dating all the way up to today. Many of these games are free or under $20. AAA Gaming like a tool is an expensive hobby. Needing the newest thing is an expensive hobby. Just playing games and enjoying gaming is not expensive; I'd argue if you are smart and patient, that gaming is one of the least expensive hobbies for the time you get out of each dollar.

Raul Menendez

Since I saw Stranger of Paradise get brought up, I'd recommend giving it another shot if you were on the fence. The combat in that game is actually pretty fun once you get access to more jobs and you're able to swap between them mid-combo. I also heard Colin say he wasn't interested in it because it was too Souls-like and I'd just like to say that the game isn't difficult at all so it isn't similar to Nioh or some of the other recent Team Ninja games if that's what he was worried about. It's similar to Nioh in the sense that you pick missions off of a map instead of the game being one continuous experience but the difficulty curve is nowhere close to Souls games or Nioh. The most annoying aspect of the game is probably just the gear/looting. It's got the same issue that Team Ninja's other games have where you find 47 katanas or helms that all have +1/-1 to some arbitrary stat, so your inventory gets cluttered quickly. Thankfully they made it easy to dismantle multiple items at the same time for upgrade materials.

Every time Colin mentions not liking unnecessary phone calls I think of this image https://cdn.dopl3r.com//media/memes_files/ways-to-contact-me-1-text-2-email-3-dm-99-smoke-signals-98-skywriting-100-phone-call-2c3W2.jpg

Chris "xbox is broken and sony games are derivative, where do you go?" Zelda Chris, you join the zelda train. Nintendo fans eating good this year (and this generation as a whole) :) easy GOTY. Dont think Spider-man 2 stands a chance, even if its good and of course it will be, its not going to be zelda good.

Raul Menendez

I think some of the creature designs are cool because they sort of remind me of Beast Wars but yeah, I'm really not a fan of anything else about the franchise. The combat in the game has my 3 biggest pet peeves: taking control away from me to watch some unnecessary animation that I can't cancel out of, enemies with insanely disjointed hit-boxes, and enemies that don't have a hit-stun animation when being hit. Color changes or flashes have always been a lazy replacement for actually providing the player with real visual feedback imo. It's also guilty of the "shoot the glowing/yellow/red spot" combat that is as old as I can remember.

Tyler Bello

Thing about Horizon is the main story line is 10/10 but the side quests aren't nearly as well written and when you go go explore the areas in the open world the Only thing to find is greensilver.. Not extra bows or anything.. Just greensilver. Doesn't encourage exploration.

Gooch Gobbler

Way to spoil the Good Wife Colin! Been meaning to check it out. I'm half kidding, sounded like early surface level stuff. Man I'm so sad to hear the sci fi shooter was cancelled. I was really hype for some playstation shooters

Gooch Gobbler

Ed Boon hinted on twitter after the trailer the next MK game would not be their next game. They have one more first

Gooch Gobbler

I actually really love the character designs. Especially the clothes, which is a weird thing to say but hey I always notice how good the clothes look

Surge!

The naming convention has gotten to a point where I can't even decipher the difference between some franchises, so you're right in describing a kid whose trying to talk about a Mortal Kombat game for instance. "Oh no not that reboot, the other reboot, MK1." "Which Mortal Kombat 1?" Madness.

Keith Huntington

nowadays mortal kombat is whatever, but holy cow the first 3 im so nostalgic for. i have such a boner for digitized sprites in games, so games like mortal kombat, lethal enforcers (the goat), primal rage, clay fighter, nba jam, pit fighter, etc are games i'll always go back to time and time again. if they are doing a reboot, they really need to do it 2d with digitized sprites, but instead of using a consumer grade 8mm camera like in 92, they would use a red 8k cinema camera. that's what i want more than anything else in 2023: a super sharp crisp digitized 2d fighter.

Keith Huntington

piggy backing off of that to the list comment, lethal enforcers arcade is easily in my top 10 games of all time list. easily. easily. that game is the sole only reason i still have a tube crt tv, because every now and again i get the hankering to fire it up on sega cd or on playstayion 1. masterpiece game top to bottom, but the arcade version specifically because no home port nailed that iconic soundtrack, and although the ps1 is arcade perfect in presentation, they re-used the arranged sega cd soundtrack.

DB Cooper

Hayder is such a blow hard. I'd gladly pay more for your autographs.

Timothy

Idk. He obviously sees he has value and people are buying them.

DB Cooper

Oh for sure, he wouldn’t keep doing it if he wasn’t making enough on the return. I get it. Just saying I’d rather pay (more than DH’s rate) for Dustin and Chris’s autographs based on the times I’ve met Hayder. Meant to be a bit facetious, guess it didn’t land lol 😅

Samuel

Great podcast as always - Dustin’s comments on Horizon are spot on, I think the limitations he mentions are what stops the game being elevated into the conversation of game of the year along side God Of War etc

Denver Walker

BOTW is empty? Did we play the same game? Maybe he just didn't like it but that viewpoint seems disingenuous. People argue there's too much to experience in the game.
