How Refreshing | Sacred Symbols: A PlayStation Podcast, Episode 246

Rumors are percolating anew of a PlayStation 5 Pro console that may launch as soon as 2024, but in reality, this isn't news at all. Our very own tech analyst told us about PS5 Pro last year right here on this very show, and with more information now garnered, it sounds like this thing is really happening. Or is it? Deep economic pain lingers (with more potentially on the way). And how much more power does the PS5 need, anyway? Let's discuss the freshest hardware murmurings. Then: Neil Druckmann spills the beans on The Last of Us' future on HBO and the potential of a third core game, Konami's Project Zircon indicates Castlevania is about to return, Chinese developers voluntarily submit to self-censorship in a new pact, and more, buttressed -- as always -- by listener inquiries. What's going on with Capcom's Pragmata? Could gaming magazines ever make a comeback? How long should a game be? Has Dustin's coffee snobbery gone a step too far? Glad to hear Metroid Prime mentioned, personally it gets a 9/10 for me absolutely loved it. I agree with your complaints about the save system it was a bit of a shock when i realised there were no checkpoints.

To Colin's point on Suicide squad. The game will sell well out of the gate, but I don't see it having a long tail as a gaas. It won't be supported more than a couple years like how Avengers is shutting down.

Square is trying to get as much money as possible for all the up they have. Or as much as possible till Sony can buy them and then make more money off of that.

Colin Powell I’d bet wouldn’t really care what you call him anymore, he’s been dead for a couple years now

Pillowcube is the shit

Not even 35 minutes in and we are already talking about pyramids, jacking off and human sacrifices. Never change boys.

Yes! Dustin, welcome to the sim racing family!

Dustin, or should I say Justin, My mom bought my wife and I Leesa pillows 5 years ago and they are still great. We just got a king bed and upgraded to the Leesa king pillow and love them as well.

My dudes, I climbed Chitchen Itza in 2005, and it was not forbidden to do it then; dozens went up and down, and the Mexican picnic blanket vendors mobbed the tourists upon their descent. Ascending it was banned in 2008 when a woman fell and broke her neck (if memory serves). As for the whole “it’s always been off-limits” commentary: Stand down.

that time of the week!!!

Milf Manor is awesome, the first episode is free on YouTube :)

I figured with the success of certain types of game that at least half of the modern general gaming audience are now people running at half capacity. That 70/30 split still hit me in the gut. I was born the same year as Colin and up to my teens I feel that I was the target audience for games. Now it's clear that at least the big players in the industry probably don't even care that I exist. I'd really like to know what percentage of players of AAA games even bother to look at the options menu one time within the first hour of play. This type of bs is why I haven't owned a console since the 360.

Best day one AAA third party Game Pass game in my opinion was A Plague Tale Requiem. Great freaking game. Wo Long and TMNT would be others. For Persona, it's more to get Xbox gamers into the series/franchise and best way to do that is by putting them in Game Pass day one. Stalker 2 will most likely be great. There's a lot of great Indies and AA titles coming. Flintlock, Hollow Knight and many others. I also loved Outriders and The Ascent to where I bought both of them at full price after playing/trying them out on Game Pass day one. The "lower" games are usually the online co-op/mulit-player games that aren't meant to be amazing games, they're meant for those who just want to play them with their friends and have a good time with them.

Was very surprised no one mentioned Plague Tale. It’s a pretty recent example too

Thank you Justin for the editing with the cover art and the bleeping of Chris's racist comment. Lol

The flaw with Colins idea that HBO made 9 episodes to get people to subscribe for 3 months is that HBO offers the first episode of all their shows for free. Thus 10 episodes would be the ideal # to get 3 months of subscribers and Neil confirmed it was actually HBO's idea to go from 10 to 9 episodes because they felt episodes 1 and 2 should be merged into 1, which is what they did.

I wondered if Colin has played Blazing Chrome? It's a great modern Contra game with lovely 2D pixel art (and an even better soundtrack than Contra IMO). Its developer; Joymasher, would be a great pick for a modern Contra or Castlevania game for me.

Johnny Shoulder

I still subscribe to a monthly PlayStation magazine. It is by the same guys who did OPM here in the UK, but they rebranded a couple of years ago to Play. Which is confusing as there used to a Play mag in the PS3/360 era.

Greg Dawson

From Software would make the best 3D Castlevania game. 💯

While I understand the disappointment that Factions will be on PS4, it doesn't surprise at all me tbh. Herman Hulst a while back did an interview where he said select games would also launch on PC and that the PS4 would be supported with games for a while longer - I assumed from then that he was referring to live service games in an attempt to get a large playerbase immediately, so this is no shock imo.

Better Graphics > FPS Always! Let's go!

Druckman has made many comments on the official TLOU HBO podcast and as a guest on other podcasts that kinda gives an idea of what Naughty Dog is working on right now, but not much. It seems to me that Factions is being worked on by an internal team but Neil has made comments about that project being the first TLOU property that he is not directing, so I don’t think factions is part 3. It also seems that a 2nd internal Naughty Dog team is working on another game that Neil is heavily involved with (other than factions), as he made many comments about not being on set for the filming of some HBO episodes and/or having zoom calls with ND while on set. When asked on the kinda funny HBO show spoiler cast if this game is part 3, his response made it seem like part 3 is not being developed right now but it was a dodgy answer. They are clearly not ready to reveal their next game.

Colin misunderstood what the guy talking about Starfield was getting at. The reason Creation Engine games generally run worse than say something like Decima running Horizon; while also being uglier than Horizon, is due to the sheer amount of different underlying systems running at once in that engine needed to make a Bethesda RPG, vs say, just a regular action game. The Creation Engine's Radiant AI for example is a resource hog, but is a core feature of Bethesda games. As is (as the boys mentioned) object permanence, with every single weapon, cup, and spoon having individual physics modeling and having to be tracked, logged and accounted for even when the player is in a different part of the world. Horizon has nothing like that because it doesn't need it, freeing up a whole bunch of memory. That memory issue is actually why the PS3 version of Fallout and Skyrim would become more unstable and be prone to crashing the longer you played with a save compared to the 360. There would be more and more changes to the world that the engine would need to take into account, eventually hitting the PS3's memory limit bringing the framerate to a crawl, before inevitably just crashing. It's not just a matter of the creation engine being great for mods due to how it's built and the many unique systems it has to play with, it's due to the fundamental nature of how that engine works makes it more resource-heavy on any hardware it is running on compared to a more sleek and less specialized engine like Unreal. Because of this people sometimes ignorantly write off Bethesda as 'having made a bad engine' without knowing the first thing about how engines actually work in the first place. You couldn't MAKE a Bethesda RPG in Decima, because it'd be missing a lot of the hallmarks of what makes a Bethesda RPG. As the engine doesn't have the same systems and toolset. You could make an RPG in Decima, probably a good one in fact, but it wouldn't be a Bethesda RPG. It's specifically the creation engine that gives those games a (for a lack of a better term) the Bethesda 'feel'. A good example of this happening elsewhere in the industry would be when EA demanded Bioware make Mass Effect Andromeda using Frostbite, an engine/toolset wholly unsuitable for RPGs. As a result, that game was not only awful, it was a technical mess with bugs and performance issues everywhere.

I'm late but cervical neck pillow, Dustin. It's a triangle shaped slab, that's the best way I can explain it. Amazing, I bought two.

I see no need for new gen refresh consoles. By the end of this year I think the PS5 will have 2 first party exclusives that are next gen only and the Xbox will have around 5 or so. If the manufacturers aren't even giving us reason for these current consoles we don't need new ones. I watch a tech guy on YouTube who talks about some of the really advanced features on the Xbox that are almost never being used and he's baffled by it. Why are we getting new machines when niether one have seemingly even fully committed to this generation?

Keith Huntington

the pillow im using now is a pillow i swapped from comfort inn on a school band trip to st. louis, mo in the spring of 1999. 24 years later, it's still like the best pillow i've ever used. not to flat, not to thick, just right in the middle. hindsight, i should have stolen all of them from the room. 😅

Synth Riders has been really awesome on PSVR2 if you like Beat Saber. I was holding off on PSVR2 until it launched but my buddy convinced me to try it and I say it is just as fun as BS.

I think most of the people that drop the framerate just don’t know what they are doing and choose resolution because it’s using named something positive like ‘quality’. Also what modern shooter even has a 30fps mode? Does Far Cry 6?
