Kara Lynne's Limited Run Games Saga | Sacred Symbols+ Episode 263

Please welcome Kara Lynne to the show. For just north of two years, Kara was the community manager for Limited Run Games, the popular (if perhaps sometimes controversial) physical games outfit run out of North Carolina. Then, the founder of BronyCon (seriously) found out she was excited about Hogwarts Legacy, and aimed to destroy her reputation. That person succeeded, at least partially -- Kara lost her job because of baseless character assassination -- but what happened to her didn't break her spirit. Indeed, in showing patience and kindness and in wielding a conciliatory nature, Kara is already in the process of rising above the absolute nonsense that attempted to tear her down. We were happy to get her for an episode of Sacred+, so that you could hear her story in her own words, and we cover a lot of bases: LRG's culture, her own political and social views, Embracer Group's likely role in her firing, her future in the industry, and more.

I don't agree Kara should have been fired. Especially not being talked to about it to see if she was transphobic. I don't see her post necessarily aiming to be that way, but it's still not right to tell them they essentially shouldn't use a bathroom they are comfortable with (and would be uncomfortable to use one not the gender they really are) because of others bad decisions. So many of our rights people abuse and most ends up creating a positive and negative impact. But people still deserve the right to xyz. Again I don't think that's something someone should be fired for alone but I'm surprised that's not part of the conversation at all here. And trans people certainly do not have control in most situations at all. I actually love all of your other content and have been an avid listener for years but it's really not sitting right with me what's not being said.

Honestly very solid. She would be a great regular. And tbh if SS needed a 4th on the show…she seems to fit the bill

Luke Silletta

I always appreciate that you call out Patrick Klepek and Danny o Dwyer. Those 2 are snakes who deserve to be taken down a peg.

kara we’re hiring lifeguards/EMTs in sarasota

Stefano Fontana

Its probably worth noting that Klepek came up with and was kind of mentored by Sessler and based on that behaviour it doesn't seem too surprising

I enjoyed this. I respect not wanting to make a stink, particularly if you want to stay in the industry. But it definitely resonates with me, wanting to stick it out and resist cancellation—if I don’t swing back at the mob, who else after me will have to suffer it? The mob just wants blood, not justice. And I mean those with the authority to kowtow are the ones that need to not do that, and fight. In the room, when the decision is being made to appease the mob—that’s when the mistake is made. Arguing on Twitter after the fact is pointless.

LastStandMedia

Ultimately, she has the agency to decide how she wants to fight. In her position, I took a different tact.

Out of the loop, what has Danny done? I love his docs and F1 podcast personally. But wasn't aware of any hatred so I'm curious.

David

Congrats on yet another great interview! Kara was great. Hope she decides to come back for the Hogwarts Legacy spoiler cast.

Honestly, I'm sorry bud, but you're WAY out of touch with reality. I'm trying to be respectful here, but to say that "Trans people do not have control in most situations at all", in 2023, is absolutely absurd. Never in the history of the western world has there been a group of individuals with so much unadulterated POWER, who also simultaneously claim to have no power. As of this moment in time, there is no group of humans in society that everyone -- from the $10.00/hr average worker to the largest billion dollar corporation's CEO -- fears more, and willingly hands over more control to, than the "trans community" (which, by the way, does not include the vast majority of actual, real-world, trans individuals). If any group in modern history has ever had "control over most situations" around them, it's trans individuals in 2023.

Dave Carsley

You have Google. Look up "Danny Odwyer hateful" or some similar search term. There will be no shortage of material for you to review. EDIT: To be clear, this doesn't mean he doesn't produce great documentaries! NoClip's content is fantastic. But Michael Jackson also made some fantastic music. That doesn't mean he was a great person.

Alex Watson

Lol of course she’s like the nicest person on the planet. What a weird target they chose

Man I hate cancel culture so Damn much but I feel Noone is truly against it. What happened to her is horrible and unacceptable and yet both of these people follow Libs of Tik Tok who does the same kind of pile ons to cringy kids, one teacher who came out as gay and the trevor project(suicide holine) Perhaps I assume too much and both of them find what Libs does to be unacceptable...In fact I'd love to hear that I'm wrong and iv finally found people who actually are against cancel culture, but for me that's always the asterisk on these cancel culture conversations. I'll just say this though, internet harassment is never acceptable even when people think it's justified because iv argued against both sides on this and they all use the same arguments. "It's just consequences" "They just reposted their tweet" ect.

this woman has such an infectious attitude in life. it just grabs you even on a screen. great interview!

Goob

I'm like 20 minutes in and I don't know what she even said that got her in trouble. Did I miss something?

TrackyMatts

How insane for such a sweet person to go through this cancel culture nonsense. Colin - I know it wouldn't help you get interviews etc if you called out that Kotaku punk, but wouldn't it be satisfying to do that? :)

Nigel

This is such an important interview. Kara's story and others like it, are lights in a very dark world. Without a doubt, there is a price for making a stand against undeserved hostility, but perhaps a cost that cuts even deeper if we succumb to it. Holding firm to some of my values will likely be injurious to my career in this industry, but there is a reward for those who can endure until the end. Its a lesson impossible for me to ignore in these stories, and it helps me to be courageous in difficult times. Thanks LSM for being a friend to those who are cast away.
