Shimmy Simulator | Sacred Symbols: A PlayStation Podcast Episode 229

God of War: Ragnarok has finally arrived, and with it comes opinions. A whole slate of them. The three of us have sat with the newest PlayStation 5 smash-hit for varying amounts of time, and we come away with equally-varying opinions that we're eager to share, expand upon, and challenge. Needless to say, we spend a whole lot of time talking about the game this week, so buckle-in. We also delve into the last seven days' news, touching on Witcher III's much-delayed PS5 release, the official announcement of Remedy's Control 2, Embracer's perilous studio structure in the face of a truncating games industry, and more. We round things out, as always, with listener inquiries generated from our audience on Patreon. Is Sacred Symbols taking on too negative a tenor as of late? Should we expect better than 1080p60 on PS5? Why do people keep giving a platform to Adam Sessler? How young is too young to join the Gamer Batallation? Start feeling better with Feals! I prefer GoW to Horizon personally. I'm not surprised you have a bitter taste of GoW due to puzzles. I have the same thing about pointless puzzles but I love the GoW story (from the 2018 game and this one). One thing GoW does better is the companion interactions during downtime. Mimir is constantly telling stories of the old days. In Horizon its silent until you run into someone. So even during traversal, GoW is telling you stories and lore.

After playing Elden Ring, and absolutely loving that game, I found it very difficult to get in to Horizon Forbidden West. I loved the first game Zero Dawn, but this on I just didn’t find interesting.I still haven’t finished it, I’m only halfway through as well. To me it’s just okay, lot of parts as well where have to do heaps of talking and listening to people talk, and not finding it very interesting, in fact sometimes puts me to sleep. Plus it had graphics issues for me on my brand new LG OLED C1 TV, so that put me off it also. God of War Ragnarok, I’ve only played a few hours, but it looks absolutely amazing on my TV, shitloads better than Horizon I think. I’m enjoying the combat more. Much more looking forward to playing it than I have been with Horizon. Still to get through a lot of it, but enjoying and liking it much more than Horizon.

My girlfriend and I broke up today after about a year of dating and the advice about the relationships and moving on to hopefully find someone that's better for you really helped. Thanks guys

Before even watching, from the title, I can just SENSE the mountains that are going to be made from molehills in this one.

I wonder if Colin is coming around to my feeling with AAA gaming but specifically PS first party games that I've felt for a long time now. My gripe with Playstation has been that they have changed the narrative from great gameplay, mechanics and addictive gameplay loops being what made games great to high fidelity and polish making games great. I simply have just never clicked with the switch the industry has told me to accept. For years I've enjoyed my time with games like Vampire Survivors, Pschonaughts 2, Bugsnax, Bug Fables, State of Decay 2 and Tinykin over the Assassins Creeds, God of Wars and Call of Dutys. Not only are they doing things that aren't just rinse and repeat but they're just fucking video games. I've been saying it for years that AAA games and specifically Sonys first party has become less and less interesting. They just do not meet my gameplay standards (I exclude Insomniac and Housemarque from that statement). I'll watch HBO for my cinematic entertainment.

I'm so thankful that Colin is finding GOW:R boring, same for me, I got the plat for GOW 2018 but this one I have to force myself to play for some reason. I also agree that Horizon FW is significantly better, my game of the year so far (I got the plat for Elden Ring too, still think Horizon is better)

Yeah I don’t if games like BugSnax, State of Decay, Tinykin, and Vampire Survivors are really leading the way for great gameplay. Respectfully disagree.

superbadisfunny .

Mr.Colin i absolutely love GOW 1-3, but I completely agree with you on ragnarok being boring asf. I quit gow(2018) like the third time I had to row that damn boat and upgrade armor. The series went from gameplay king to putting it in the background even though mainline games were all success and only failed at the weaker spinoff games. I think the team is trying to complete with naughty dog instead of being its own thing and in ragnarok there are so many pauses in the cutscenes between dialogue that I rolled my eyes. Also early kratos was fun compared to other main characters. Angry and wants to kick ass and sometimes you need that. Now kratos is a boring parent who needs therapy. I'm glad I didn't purchase this game. #notmytempo lol

I prefer Horizon to God of war but the idea that anyone can find one boring but not the other makes zero sense. Even less sense than finding either of them boring because they're both masterpieces. Horizon has literal tens of hours of just back and forth conversations with NPCs (and i listened to them all and enjoyed them but they are more boring than anything in god of war), but yet God of war is boring? Lmfao okay... Still think Horizon is GOTY but the idea of hating God of war but loving Horizon just is someone being a contrarian for no reason again.

It seems the assessment of GOW when CMC are not far into the game is premature. It’s hard to have an impression of a game when your 1/4 of the way through. Some games continue to get better others drag. My opinion has changed on games massively throughout

LastStandMedia

I think Sony suffers from a lack of variety, regardless of the top tier quality of what they have. They can have both.

LastStandMedia

Horizon is a much better game. There's nothing that God of War does better. That's my opinion.

Have you ever played State of Decay, Tinykin, or Vampire Survivors? Those game are great and they're actually fun to play. State of Decay has one the greatest gameplay loops of all time. that game has had a dedicated player base for like 6 years. Trust me it has great gameplay or it would not still be getting regular updates.
