We really hope you like the Horizon series, because a new rumor from a reliably-placed source indicates that much, much more of it is coming. There are purportedly five Horizon projects in the works: Call of the Mountain on PSVR2, some sort of Zero Dawn remake for PS5, the inevitable third game in the core trilogy, a Netflix series, and now an MMORPG from South Korean firm NCSoft. Meanwhile, a journalist attempts to race-bait Final Fantasy XVI producer Naoki Yoshida, and Naughty Dog hires the renowned creator of Fortnite's monetization system. But this episode's doomish vibe really begins with Doom itself, since renowned franchise composer Mick Gordon nukes id Software from space in a sprawling, 14,000 word document chock-full of receipts. In addition to other news, we round out our show with questions, comments, concerns, thoughts, and ideas, as we always do. Topics this week include a revitalized Sonic the Hedgehog, the potential of PlayStation Stars, the disparity in pricing between physical and digital software, and a rant about "with no ice," which is how all soft drinks should rightly be ordered.

I love our mattress-eating lady being described as both fat and black. Colin, I’m continually perplexed by your inability to describe the black people you mention by anything other than the color of their skin. This is more and more noteworthy as your diatribes on class being more important than race seem to pop up almost weekly. I’m not sure if we can live in a world where race isn’t important if all anyone has to offer, in telling a story about a black person, is that said person is foremost, before anything else, black. In all these years of Last Stand Media I struggle to think of times when you made a note that the person you were mentioning was white. Funny enough, I started writing this while only listening to the beginning of the show and hadn't gotten to the Final Fantasy bit. Listen, you're right, that is the best response in the history of responses. And somehow, I still can't see anything other than the bullshit it is. I'd rather he say "we don't want to feature people of color" or "we can't feature people of color," because the idea that you can't have black and brown people in a game that features magic and dragons, for reasons of "accuracy," is down right laughable. There aren't enough words for the emotions I feel when playing Horizon: Forbidden West. Colin, you pointed it out yourself, there's a multitude of black and brown faces present, and in my estimation most of them are even voiced by black and brown people. I too took notice of Jason Kelly's performance of Colt in Deathloop and how well they wrote his character. Not only is Bayek, featured in Assassin's Creed Origins, one of the best black characters ever, he represents the type of moral and objective good that most players pretend to have when playing their RPGs. The option to have his coarse natural hair on full display is a detail that greatly enhanced my time with the title. These conversations will continue to crop up in your show. I appreciate you all for sharing your opinions and talking about tough subjects in ways that sometimes look a bit different than what you might hear in another podcast. Your opinions are valid. But I ask you as a fan to not speak for me. Don't rope my feelsing into that of your so-called "Twitter mob." I don't spend my time on social media yelling for everyone everywhere to be black in my games. I don't wanna hold every dev and team accountable if there's someone who doesn't look like me at the center of their stories. But, you had better believe that when that happens, I notice. I hate Twitter too. I really do. For me, it has served only as a vehicle to sow division and create the worst kind of discourse. Twitter doesn't represent anything other than Twitter. And to that point, yeah, most topics there are overblown – you can throw in topics about representation and race in there as well. But please understand, these discussions were happening before Twitter and they will happen after Twitter. Your "it wasn't like this when I was a kid" doesn't exist - rather, it's a small piece to a pie that you cannot possibly be privy to. People will always want representation, and that want is just as valid as someone who doesn't have a "dog in the fight." IGN is probably wrong in asking the question, and probably wrong in their "fishing" style "reporting." However, what's worse than the question is the answer. And it's simple, they didn't do it because they don't care. And I need you to understand, that is ok. They don't have to care. It's not their job to care. But people care. I care. Don't talk to me or others like we aren't supposed to care and place a specific value on the entertainment that we spend the same hard money to enjoy. I apologize for the book. Y'all are the homies. You do great work. Much love.

It'll be funny if Bethesda responds to the Doom controversy by filling their next E3 showcase with fans howling over ESO expansion trailers that are 100% CGI. In 2019, they were getting standing ovations. They probably wrote so many checks they had to lick their pens. 😂

Random thought about the premium tier of PS Plus...what if it wasn't ready, but with the economy, game delays, etc but they pushed it out to recoup money in the mean time? Also, while the answer is certainly a happy medium...would you rather games announced then delayed and maybe you play 3-4 years later? Or kept under wraps until near the end and released that year when they know they'll hit the target?

7/10 "too much white people" - IGN, probably. Although to be fair it's a fantasy game inspired by medieval Europe. Keyword, inspired. In a world where people turn into demons, ride big yellow birds and have the ability to jump 50 feet into the air and shoot fireballs you technically can create a POC character. And I think it's fine if you don't want to, as long as it's not for some racists reason. I do agree with him on the importance of writing compelling characters and I hope they execute well on this.

PuppiesOnParade

The Playstation Plus Premium tier is just a renaming and slow rollout of all the garbage PS3 streaming that already existed on PS Now. I don't know how anyone thought it would be anything other than this.

Colonial officer’s outfit? Hmm. Might I recommend instead a coonskin cap?

Just listening to this episode, and as someone who works in reality tv I feel like I can add some more info on Chris's teacher who was a writer for said genre. Generally, writing for reality tv happens in reverse; basically, we film everything first, and then the 'writers' or 'story producers' come in and form a narrative around what was shot. They can also work with loggers who make notes on what's happening as it is happening, or post-producer's who work with the editors to craft a story around what occurred. It's just as important for a casting producer to find good talent that is going to be interesting to watch and give good content. So when someone says reality is fake and all scripted, that's not really the case, it's just highly molded and shaped after the fact to tell the story the producers want. At least that's the way it works here in Australia (it may be different in other countries) and I've worked as a camera operator on shows such as Big Brother and The Amazing Race. Anyway hope this helps; sorry if there are any grammatical or spelling errors as I wasn't sure where the best place to post this was.

Very cool insight! As someone who is watching Love is Blind rn, I am feeling this greatly, haha. I don't think reality TV being "scripted" is sustainable compared to what you describe. Eventually the bottom would fall off.

On the subject of digital vs physical game i always used to prefer physical but switched to digital when i got my disc PS5 at launch. I did this mainly for convenience I don’t always buy games day one so struggled to find certain game’s I wanted outside the launch window. I live in the uk just outside central London my local game store’s are like 8 miles away or so & outside the launch window for a game there stock level can be shocking. Yes I could always order online for delivery but i have had some many game’s turn up damaged in the post that I just don’t bother anymore. So digital is a win for me i don’t have to worry about fining a copy of what i want & i can always wait for a sale if i want to so it’s a win win for me personally. The only game disc’s i have used to date on my PS5 are PS4 titles I still own or FIFA 21 because of the free PS5 upgrade & I opted for the Uncharted upgrade offer other than that i am purely digital now days.

In 3:00 - "How Purely Designed Babies Are" segment I am reminded of a theory Yuval Noah-Harari exposed me to: It is possible that modern-day babies are "prematurely" born, due to how homosepians - females in particular - evolved from traversing environments by using 4 limbs to a 2-limbed traversal, which had an effect on how the fetus and womb behave.

Sorry dude, the fat black chick eating the mattress was the best way I could identify if we were talking about the same person. Turns out it was a good way to figure it out, because we were. (You sound like the old MadTV skit where the person is afraid to say that the person they're looking for is black.)

Dennis Johnson

Lol. I'm not afraid to say it. I get it. I say it. Everyone says. It doesn't make it any less annoying though. Especially when it never goes the other way.
