The Dire State Of Games Media ft. Colin Moriarty | Defining Duke Ultimate Episode 89

One thing that Last Stand Media prides itself on is the ability to tackle the tough topics in gaming and have meaningful, insightful conversations on them. Following a slew of layoffs across G4TV, Fanbyte, Future, and the selling off of various media outlets; I asked our very own Colin Moriarty to join me (Matty) to help us see the forest through the trees. While we're not here to celebrate said layoffs, there is a brutal truth that must be received with this transformation in how media is consumed and it involves a lot of mirror looking that no one is interested in doing. Now, it's time to talk. Together, Colin and I comb through our personal history working on different sides of the industry and what brought us to this point where smaller businesses are outperforming websites with millions of dollars stuffed into them.

Thanks for bringing up the blue collar guys who listen to you while we work. I work in an Amazon warehouse, it’s a dystopian existence. I’m technically not allowed to have earbuds in while working, but 10 hours a day packing boxes with nothing to listen to is heinous so I keep a beanie pulled down over my ears, I’ll risk the write up. Thanks to everyone at LSM for making quality entertainment every week that make getting through the day so much easier.

Just wanted to point out that in reference to the Fanbyte discussion, the Bungie connection to Tencent I think is being confused with a partnership they have with NetEase, another Chinese company. Really cool to have a show like this btw, always respect the kind of community and content you guys cultivate at Last Stand. Lots of good discussions. Thanks!

1up was really special at the time. The 1up Show was so ahead of its time. And GFW Radio is still in my books one of the best gaming podcasts that ever was. I still listen to those clips on Youtube and laugh my ass off.

I know it's been mentioned several times across various LSM shows but it really is worth acknowledging how INSANE fanbyte begging for clicks on twitter actually is Not only are you publicly conspiring to commit fraud (from an advertisers perspective) but you are just straight up admitting that your work isn't even worth reading. The fact no other publication picked up and condemned this shows just how unprofessional and rotten this industry is.

Great discussion. Agree with Colin. Diagnosis is terminal for traditional games media. I feel zero connection with these sites and all remain completely off my radar for reviews, news and opinion. Looking at the recent GameSpot/Giant Bomb acquisitions, I can't imagine both have much of a future. Giant Bomb in particular is a shadow of its former self,

It's crazy what Matty was saying about YT thumbnails. I guess I'm in the absolute minority. Whenever I see a thumbnail with someone pulling a face next to something (could be game, movies or music art) I immediately "Don't recommend channel" as to me it looks like a waste of time and junk vids/clickbait. Like theyre desperately trying to get a click from a rando. I guess like Danny Glover - I'm too old for this s*** 😂

2023-01-05 01:34:03 Thought this was relevant.. a month or so ago, I posted to Reddit asking "What websites do you guys visit on a daily basis?" My two mainstays are Collider and IGN, though my interest in both is gradually waning as the quality of the writing dips and advertiser influence becomes more transparent. I shit you not, every single answer on that post was simply a list of social media websites, and they all listed YouTube. Nobody brought up a single website otherwise. The corporate route is becoming extinct - and I believe that the advent of Work-From-Home thanks to the pandemic fast tracked the process. You guys are absolutely right that working for yourself, creating things on YouTube and such is the new way forward. And to Matty's point "a rising tide raises all ships", I think the way you guys do it is simply a brilliant model. Everybody's got their own projects, AND everybody works together. And you let all of it loosely tie into itself thanks to the fandom you've amassed via Patreon and Discord. Colin brought me to Last Stand brought me to Sacred Symbols > Defining Duke > Chris's YT > Retro Rebound > and the rabbit hole plunges ever further on down. I've officially got a new foundation for the way I consume games media. And I appreciate you guys greatly for it. Now! If only I could convince myself that there's logic in quitting my job and going full-tilt into my own thing...

I really appreciate these conversations going more in depth into what the landscape for other media outlets look like. In a way it kind of brings more value to the money I give to LSM as the quality of work is very high and best of all I don’t have to worry about the quality changing. As someone who used to watch Kinda Funny much more, I feel like the move into a new studio has removed the more intimate feeling of the content as it isn’t a bunch of them on their webcams anymore. What makes remote podcasts kind of great is it makes you feel like you are on a discord call with your buds just talking about games. Adding a bunch of lights, screens and smoke machines doesn’t enhance the content for a viewer what so ever.
