The Marketing Intern | Sacred Symbols+, Episode 229

Please welcome Jeremiah Potter to Sacred+. Jeremiah is a senior at the University of Kentucky, and his studies there led him to an interesting experience this past summer, when he worked as an intern at Unity Technologies. Unity is a huge company in the gaming industry, employing more than 5,000 people and earning more than a billion dollars in annual revenue. (You'd probably know them best from their titular engine that powers the likes of Hollow Knight, Kerbal Space Program, Tunic, Inscryption, Death's Door, and so much more.) Jeremiah is a prime example of what I often talk about on our show: That the games industry has a varied appetite for people with all sorts of skill-sets, not just ones rooted in the creation of games themselves. As a 'growth marketing' intern, Jeremiah interacted with a sector of gaming many don't even know exist, and his experience is proof that you, too, can make your way inside, if you work hard enough (and catch a little bit of luck along the way).

Really great talk, I am currently taking the somewhat same path as Jeremiah has. Aspiring level designer living in Kansas, spending my time trying to network on LinkedIn and applying for entry level jobs and working on making level design videos and personal projects to share to that network I am building. It is a rough field out there and every little bit counts. As someone who went to college but wasn't pushed into doing internships, I sadly missed the opportunity to partake in internships. Companies only really keep those opportunities open for current students and those who have graduated within a short time period so my big advice for anyone currently in school is to really go for those internships, it will save you a lot of headache later if you miss that window.

Hey Jeremy! Connect with me on LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeremiahpotter/); let's share our connections and help each other out :)

Thanks for the link, I tried connecting earlier but your profile only had a message button with a lock icon so I am not sure if there is a privacy setting in place on LinkedIn keeping me from adding you. I will look in my settings just to make sure it isn't on my end.

If you're able to message me, we should be able to connect that way. That's how I started getting my first contacts in games; once you get a conversation started, LinkedIn allows you to connect.

As someone who has an adverse relationship with school, I would love to hear input from someone whos in the industry without a college degree.

"Building Better Worlds" as always! Good stuff friends

Wretched Spawn

Colin, was this his interview or yours? You talked/soaped too much and overshadowed the dude. You pontificate enough on SS proper, let your guest take focus in the interview.
