Oh, Oh, Oh, Jimmy's Cryin' | Sacred Symbols: A PlayStation Podcast Episode 219

It's clear: PlayStation's problems with Microsoft's in-motion purchase of Activision-Blizzard run deep. The financial implications are enormous, of course, but in going public with his dismay in potentially losing Call of Duty on PlayStation platforms beginning in 2028, CEO Jim Ryan illustrates Sony's concern is material enough that it's willing to take a PR beating to make its point. Our theory? They're simply trying to buy time as they continue to sort out their strategy and make sense of a growing consensus that doesn't necessarily cater to what they do best. Nonetheless, we discuss the wide-ranging, ongoing situation between Microsoft, Sony, Activision-Blizzard, and various global economic regulators that will make or break the deal. Other news this week includes the announcement of PSVR2 game Firewall: Ultra, Tencent's growing acquisition of Ubisoft, the mostly-missed confirmation that Returnal is indeed coming to PC, the reveal of Cyberpunk 2077's DLC, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Can Sony gleam anything from Microsoft's mismanagement of Halo and 343? With Spider-Man 2 rumors percolating, what are we most looking forward to in the sequel? Have we reached a point of irreversible open-world fatigue? Did someone really try to make the case that 'Chicago-style' pizza is the 'real' pizza? Check out our merch! Mine was among the Firefly Editions shipped in a bubble mailer and obliterated in transit. Support said my options were either to send it back for a refund or a 20% off coupon for a future pre-order from PS Direct. I opted for the former. Given how high demand is for these and how hard/expensive they are to get, I think many will opt to just keep it and accept the damages. Which is unfortunate, because it means the impact to their bottom line is nil (they still make money at 20% off, after all) and the odds they'll do anything more about it are equally low. :/

I love the idea of “Organic” games. :)

I actually have one of those memory card adapters for ps3. I never thought to look up the price. I bought it at the launch of ps3 and put all my old saves on my launch ps3.

I wonder if MS is only letting Call of Duty on PS for that amount of time due to a new console being planned by then. It would be great marketing for the next Xbox "The only place to play Call of Duty... Available day one on Game Pass" I could see that have quite a few player jump over to Xbox.

Is the console home screen different in the states and EU? I don't understand what you guys mean by the start screen. I don't see any ads, and the console selects my latest game :/

Did they ever upload the assassin’s creed showcase reactions?

They noted this at the top of the episode description: "After Ubisoft's underwhelming presentation, we decided to keep this episode as is with no pickup. We'll be covering the Ubisoft news on episode 220."

Sony just needs to finally produce enough PS5s and they will be fine. Xbox series X starting price is 460€ here in Central Europe but PS5 DIGITAL starting price is 649! That is almost three times the price of Series S which I have bought new for 222€. And disc version is even more expensive.

Regarding the broken TLOU received by people. Do yankiedoodles not have basic consumer rights? At least in the UK you have 14 days from the day of receipt to return a product for any reason (even if you've just changed your mind). If an item has arrived damaged, its on the seller to eat the cost. Regardless of governmental rights its really bad of Sony for not making it right.

LastStandMedia

It's crazy, but I'm glad to hear, at least anecdotally, that Sony is trying to make it right now.

LastStandMedia

There are consumer rights, of course, but I'm sure Sony will represent in some fine print that they aren't responsible for damaged goods sent in-transit.

Huh, I expected this would be my last LSM episode as a Patreon, but was pleasently surprised. The PlayStation bashing wasn't as rough as I anticipated - table not flipped. ┬─┬ノ( º _ ºノ)

A bit of the misunderstanding here is that Sony is offering refunds to people that wish to return the product, but no full or partial refunds while keeping the product and there is no replacement product option offered (due to lack of inventory). PlayStation Direct, the store that sold the Firefly Edition, has a standard return policy on all of its goods.

Seinfeld reference without knowing about it. Much like Elaine and George making fun of Jerry when he isn’t in the room, Chris and Dustin do it when Colin leaves as well. Life imitating Art.
