Gym Class | KnockBack, Episode 238

For school children around the world, gym class is a grueling, years-long rite of passage, and when we were growing up, it was especially arduous. Climbing ropes. Getting picked last. The dreaded Presidential Challenge. Square dancing?! Let's be honest: Gym was (and still is) complete nonsense -- a distraction from learning the fundamentals -- but it's a collective memory for most of us, and it's the perfect topic for KnockBack. So nock your arrow, pull yourself up, go watch film, and then join us for an extensive discussion about a piece of perpetual Americana: Physical education. Or the lack thereof.

These more vague topics that aren't centered around media are the literal best!

Man this episode was so good. The square dancing!!! Back in 7th grade there was a student who used to watch me change every single day for gym. He would stand about 3 feet from me and watch the entire time. I never knew what to do because I think he was on the spectrum so I just let it happen. Anyways great vid!

Man those stories of the kids getting embarrassed in gym brought back some memories... Not of me though. When those AND1 mixtape videos came out in the early 2000s, kids who didn't know about them we're getting basketballs bounced off their faces, off their shoes, getting downtrailed then dunked on. Fights were breaking out etc. It was brutal, hilarious but brutal.

The whole bit about showering after P.E. (that's what it was always called growing up in the northwest) never bothered me at all. Maybe it was because I grew up an athlete but it never crossed my mind that it would be bothersome. There were dudes that didn't but I couldn't imagine sitting in class with swamp ass with jeans on for hours after P.E lol.

I can't even put into words how well you guys broke down the mental/emotional implications , good and bad of gym class. I found the discussion on previous generations and how that played a role in the designing and molding of our current gym curriculum fascinating. Side note, it was mandatory in Public Baltimore Middle schools to take a shower once every report card quarter. You were told you'd fail the class and fail the year if you did not disrobe completely and shower. This was early 90s. What a strange time.
