We Miss You, Strategy Guides | Sacred Symbols+, Episode 220

If you grew up in the '80s and '90s, and even into the early aughts, print strategy guides were a staple of our hobby. They lined the walls and counters of your local games store, had a space in Toys 'R' Us, were promoted in ads, and were even pimped by the hardware manufacturers and developers themselves, most notably Nintendo. Brady, Prima, and even smaller labels like Versus released thousands of print guides, but these days, it's pretty much a dead end. The Internet -- first GameFAQs, then video -- killed the need for them. Yet, there are those of us who still have a fire burning for them (it's how I got my start in the industry, after all). To celebrate print guides -- their vibrant past, irrelevant present, and hopefully-vibrant future -- I invited a strategy guide master to the show. His name is Phil Summers, he's the designer, author, and artist behind Hand-Drawn Game Guides, and he's one of the only people I've ever had the pleasure of meeting who loves the craft as much as I do. Please enjoy as we gush.

This just in, Colin: according to Jason Schrier, the next assassins creed will be called: Mirage. Lmao ;) thanks for the great work

I lost all of my Pokémon Prima guides. I definitely wanna rebuy them again in the future. Also, I’m tired of Nintendo going after their fans when it comes to passion projects and mods. Other companies like Valve would congratulate & hire these people.

I miss poring over a brand new guide for a newly released game so much, this speaks to me. Bring back the guides! Still purchasing what little there is available though the slow trickle of future press guides.

So it was Dagan's kindness that essentially birthed your career... interesting how I never knew that. Makes me recall my shortcomings as an older brother. I never included my 7 year younger brother in anything and he ended up working for IGN Meth.

I loved this episode. There was nothing like having that crisp new strategy guide full of maps and great artwork to supplement your games. I use video guides a lot now but they don't hold the same magic that flipping through the pages of a guide used to.

Caleb Greer

I checked out the Zelda guide. That man has more talent in his off-hand thumb than I’ve had my entire life, lol

Future Press seems to still be fighting the good fight. I have their coveted Elden Ring guides on preorder. They are releasing two volumes to compensate for the sheer size of that game. They also did the Horizon guides and the other From games like Sekiro and Bloodborne.

This is definitely something that would be nice.. nothing like using a physical book to plan out how you wanna do things or get tips.. Saturday morning coffee and favorite game with a nice book. No phone or video guide...I remember picking through mgs2 with a guide a few years ago. Always enjoyable.

Enjoyed the episode, despite not caring about strategy guides very much, lol. I do have quite a few of the collector's edition guides from the 2010s, hehe. Colin, any plans to bring Tom back for some updates on emulation for PS3? With Dustin talking about the lack of new updates to PS+ Premium lately, plus the price increase, and the announced 2023 release for PSVR2, I think it's a good time!

It's the best. Our computers and phones are so distracting. I'm distracted by my phone in all facets.

Tom will be back in the coming weeks to talk about a wide swath of tech news, but I wanna get PSVR2 details out in the wild first.

His guides are beautiful! Not a strategy guide person but would have purchased a print version of it was allowed to be sold!

Barzenak

I love them and often would buy them as a hard cover symbol of a game I loved.

Man I loved this episode. I have a ton of guides still. I have almost a complete set of Nintendo Powers and going back through them has been a trip. His guides are amazing. Looking forward to his newsletter! Reminds me of the Nintendo Fun Club issues they used to send before Nintendo Power came out.
