Saving Private Ryan | KnockBack, Episode 235

Steven Spielberg's 1998 film Saving Private Ryan is widely considered the greatest war movie of all-time, and honestly, it's hard to disagree. There's an absolutely obsessive level of detail in every single aspect of the production, and it gets just about everything right. See, in 1944, the world was a different place than it was today. The Allies were in an existential crisis against true evil. Brave people who barely knew anything about the world were asked to step up to the plate, and they did, sacrificing in ways we simply can't imagine. Their efforts helped shape the world today as we know it; the very least we can do is gush about The Greatest Generation. Check out our merch! LastStandMedia.Store

A most excellent video Gents - I am honored my question was selected. One additional comment on Upham vs the Unit - Hanks commands a squad of Rangers. Double volunteers, no draftees in the all Volunteer Ranger Regiments, those men wanted to be there.

I remember first seeing this film with my dad in theaters when I was 10; it's the best war movie I've ever seen. I last watched my blu ray copy of it probably 2 or 3 years ago. This was about to make me go watch it again, but I just ordered the 4K blu ray on Amazon instead. Saving Private Ryan deserves to be watched in the best possible way.

This movie made me obsessed with European History and WW2. Combine that with the fact that Band of Brothers, Medal of Honor Allied Assault and Call of Duty 1 came out soon after, ah such good times. Also Call of duty had missions that were very historically accurate. Edit - i just realized this movie is about Saving Jim Ryan!!!!

Love this movie, listening now. Have we we ever had the film Gettysburg as a topic? Would love to see that in a future episode if not

Great job as always, guys. Loved the banter at the beginning, and could listen to historical commentary for hours.

The fact you guys didn’t discuss the Czech prisoners saying “Look, I washed up for supper.” Scene is bummer. To me it’s the most heart breaking scene in the movie. Context for those that don’t know. During the scene where the “Germans” are surrendering and are shot to death in the beginning of the movie and the joke is they said “Look, I’m all washed for supper.” The heart breaking thing is they are Czech prisoners who were saying "Please don't shoot me, I am not German, I am Czech, I didn't kill anyone, I am Czech!". The Germans put a lot of prisoners on beach construction duties and many didn’t shoot during the invasion, they stayed at their post and tried to surrender thinking they were doing the right thing and they were killed. It’s one of the saddest moments in the movie.

Such an amazing episode guys! But I have to pick with you Colin, whilst the Germans may have taken many prisoners, they plenty of times like when the SAS got caught and lined up and shot as spies which came from Hitler himself as a instruction in 1942 It was the "so called commando order" that any Allied parachutist would not be taken prisoner but shot as spies, in clear violation of the rules

It is. For anyone who's curious, the 4k blu ray of this movie is insanely high quality. Dolby Vision really brings the picture to life, it's a reference quality disc. Absolutely worth the purchase.
