A Collector's Tale | Sacred Symbols+, Episode 210

Please welcome Michael to Sacred+. Michael -- proprietor of the YouTube channel @ObjoGaming -- is a fervent and dedicated retro physical games collector, and he wanted to talk about his craft on the show. Naturally, we do just that. Within, we discuss recent price increases plaguing the scene, the idea of 'gatekeeping' the community on lines of dedication, wealth, and intent, the decline of the physical games market mirroring the rise of the aftermarket, the value (or lack thereof) of grading systems, buying retro games as a store of financial value, and so much more. Please enjoy. And don't let that money burn a hole in your pocket...

I'm about to check this out but how was this not a conversation with Pat Contri? Just the connection with Dagan and Pat also Colin did a podcast with Pat around the time CLS started.

Great episode, as someone who's been dipping their toes into retro game collecting recently it's awesome you had a guest on that was knowledgeable and passionate about the subject like Micheal. Definitely have him on again at somepoint

I didn't realize I had to tap only Pat Contri for retro games-related things, I will certainly keep that in mind for the future.

Really enjoyed listening to this one. I am not a collector, as I am a musician and teacher in my 20s and can't afford the hobby, but I'm loving hearing discussion about this from all these Last Stand voices. Hope to be able to do it someday, so all this info is as helpful as it is interesting!! Btw Michael, you're clearly so knowledgeable and very well-spoken. Kudos.

I was just surprised it wasn't Pat. I thoroughly enjoy both last stand and Pat's content so maybe I was just hoping you two would've collaborated again. With that said Michael did great and I'm going to make sure to check out his YouTube channel.

Agree with Colin on how your childhood games feel retro to you but not others. Picked up Dragon Quest V DS when I was 22, enjoyed it, and put it on the shelf. Was shocked when I found out the current market price!

I like Pat, but I haven't spoken to him in years, honestly. He's a personal friend of Dagan's, but I don't know him.

I was just thrilled V and VI finally came out! Didn't know I was buying a collector's item, like you noted.

Love the collecting conversation. I've been in and out of picking up for PS3 and 3DS the past few months, I'm currently back on it. Will definitely check out Wii games while they're still cheap

That thumbnail is a thing of beauty but that stuff can end up owning you. Still love the discussion and living vicariously though other peoples videogame collecting obsessions.

Kinda wonder about modern system collecting (they'll be retro one day). Most games won't work without a day one /day 100 patch. And then there's games that have a box but just a download code. I'm sure it will just drive the price up of Ps2 and older gen.
