Final Fantasy XIV: A Brief Primer | Sacred Symbols+ Episode 203

Please welcome Haven Breithaupt to the show. You don't know Haven -- he's but an Every Day Man -- and that's why I wanted to have him on the show. He has nothing to sell you, or any content for you to watch. All he wants to do is evangelize Final Fantasy XIV (particularly its Realm Reborn revitalization and its four expansions), and I thought Sacred Symbols+ was a great venue for that. Thing is, we've been talking about this PS3, PS4, and PS5 game a ton on Sacred as of late -- it's particularly relevant since its director and producer is also working on Final Fantasy XVI, due out on PS5 in 2023 -- but we don't know very much about it. We bet a lot of you don't, either. So, let's get into the basics of Final Fantasy XIV: How it works, how you play it, what its economy and social aspects are like, its expansions and classes, and its future, too. We also answer the greatest question of all, particularly for Colin: Can it be played alone? The answer is yes! So let's chat.

Wow this ep feels made for me. Very curious about this game, it’s the only mainline FF I haven’t played(excluding FF XI)

Very excited to listen to this, as someone who has been toying with the idea of starting FF14 I think this will be very insightful for me.

Pretty good listen. Been playing 14 since the original it's an amazing game that anyone who has played a FF game should check out cause it has so many throwbacks to all of them. Also the ps4/5 versions are great if you aren't a pc player

So excited to give this a listen, FFXIV is my favorite game of all time. It’s an incredible FF and an amazing live service experience.

Bring Haven back! I can’t tell you how excited I was to see you guys cover this game more extensively. I’m a day on SS listener/viewer and FF14 is my all time favorite game. Haven was very insightful, well spoken, and did a great job. I would love to hear you guys have him back with future content updates as well as the inevitable FF16 spoilercast! Thank you so much for this. For real. Made my day. And shout out to Haven

Really great video, I have been playing FFXIV on and off since ARR released and it really is a lonely man's MMO. I hardly socialize in the game, I just join the dungeons, raids and trials I need to get done and play with other people but usually if I am messing up the other players tend to be more helpful and inviting than the community on other MMO's and that is one aspect that I don't think was brought up. Also I want to add that during the time Yoshi P and team was developing A Realm Reborn, they actually kept 1.0 up and still worked on as many updates for that first version as they could push while simultaneously working on the new version and still managed to keep ARR secret while doing it.

I played FFXIV for last three years without any friends, I highly recommand you play the game Colin it is really good and story is up there with 4 and 6 or even better imo. and the community is friendly and polite unlike other MMO. even the father of FF Hironobu Sakuguchi himself is now addicted to the game as you can see most of his twitter post is about his FFXIV adventure.

Thanks to Haven for coming on and sharing all the background. Haven is very well spoken and should definitely be invited back as more is released.

I loved this game so much. I spent countless hours on it and met my best friend on there , who later died from Covid last year.

Ya the actual ammount of time you have to be forced to play with other people while leveling up is actually quite small. I started ARR in August and Finished EW early January because I wanted to see what all the talk was about in terms of this amazing story. Pretty soon if not already the earlier expansions/base game will have NPCs to do dungeons with which reduces that even more. I never found it particularly a bad or cumbersome experience when having to group with other people, usually everyone is super nice and the content isnt all that hard to begin with while leveling

This was awesome. I can’t imagine how anxiety inducing this would be but Haven did an awesome job. Would love to see him back on the show

Great episode. I have a lot respect for you, Colin, for having a listener on the show. Now, you need to have a conversation about the creative industry its’ conflict with capitalism in video games with your boy. :)
