Bobby Kotick's No Skater | Sacred Symbols: A PlayStation Podcast Episode 208

The news can be painful sometimes, and, well... get the medicine. It appears Activision, in its infinite wisdom, halted its developer Vicarious Visions (now Blizzard Albany) from remaking PlayStation 2-native titles Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 and 4 in a similar fashion it remade the PSone THPS games for PS4 in 2020. This leaves us crestfallen, wondering why such a money-hungry entity would leave such obvious cash on the table. We also get into copious news surrounding Final Fantasy XVI, DICE's stubbornness when it comes to Battlefield 2042, Creative Assembly's questionable FPS HYENAS, John Garvin's new Web3 game, various PlayStation Plus updates, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Are we being too harsh on The Last of Us: Part I? What's our gut tell us about God of War: Ragnarok's release date and review scores? Why do Xbox fans seem particularly agitated at us? Will Chris create the most successful OnlyFans in history? Follow the hosts on Twitter! Shredder’s Revenge is sooooo good. Recently played/beat it with a few buddies and had a great time. Can’t recommend it enough. Dagan will love it.

The media Sony vs. Xbox bias is easy to understand; there's more nostalgia for Sony and a lot of video games media is based on appealing to 30+ year old adult children who miss the days of playing their PS1. Sacred Symbols is absolutely a more fair show in terms of valuing objective opinions over pandering, but to say broad media isn't pandering is to be in denial.

I would say: Remaster: polishing an existing game to look or run better on more powerful hardware (PS3 HD collections, GTA V iterations). Remake: recreating the same game with new assets (Shadow of the Colossus, THPS 1+2). Maybe some quality of life additions which didn’t exist previously, or new controls etc Reimagining: new game with same setting/plot/characters (FF VII remake) It’s not going to happen, but I would still love a ‘remake’ in this sense of the original FFVII as I never played it all the way through. I can’t bring myself to play it now. Also Naughty Dog should ‘remake’ Uncharted Golden Abyss. It would surely make its money back given 95% gamers haven’t played it. It’s more uncharted for minimal effort.

There just doesn't seem to be as much PlayStation coverage, mostly because I think a few shows have cleared space.

There's also just way more PlayStation owners, so it makes sense what gets more coverage

$70 for Last of Us Part 1 is more expensive than I thought it would be. I was expecting a PS5 version of Parts 1 and 2 to be announced for that price. I'm still going to buy Part 1 on launch, so I can't claim that it's overpriced. The way things are going we might accept the $70 price tag right before we see it change to $80.

I was just listening to this and switched to the YouTube app mid sentence. Holy fuck the audio quality on the video playback is awful on the Patreon App. I never realized it. Anyways great show! I’m gonna finish it on YouTube!

I think all of you but Dustin are way off when it comes to your predictions on god of war ragnorok, the series as a whole averages around a 91-92 on metacritic (except for ascension which is around 80 which was made by a side team and had a terrible tack on multiple player). Personally I think it'll get around a 91

Digging the Wonka shirt.. and I may be late to the party on this, but I really am digging the vibes of the room now. Nice cozy couch, and those lit shelves are dope. Well done, Mr. Moriarty. A tip of the hat, if you will.

Another great episode. Agree with your takes regarding Xbox and in relation to Rise of the Tomb Raider specifically. There is a difference between supporting a fresh game off your own back (Spider-Man) and tying down the direct sequel to another game for a year. I don’t begrudge Xbox for doing this by the way, being platform agnostic and being fortunate to having access to everything, I don’t mind a timed exclusive to give a bit of extra value to one over the other. And let’s be real for a moment, another reason why there is more noise about timed exclusives when Xbox do it is because it impacts more people in the console space. Head-to-head against PlayStation, including this gen and last gen, they have about a 30% market share. So you’re potentially freezing out 70% of the community. If you add Nintendo to the mix it’s 80%. I’m not sure people understand how big the gap is and was.

Regarding your discussion about games being so colorful and wacky at the moment, I'm surprised y'all don't remember the industry we just passed. For YEARS people were complaining about drab, grey and brown, serious and gritty linear shooters and action games. 'Linear' itself was treated as a dirty word. So is it ANY surprise we're now flooded with overly colorful, wacky open world games and battle royales? And now everyone's 'tired' of open world games... Gamers need to be careful of what they complain about and ask for.
