Please welcome Vince Ingenito back to +. Vince is a long-time industry veteran, critic, streamer, and -- for our purposes -- a bona fide fighting game expert. With Capcom's next mainline Street Fighter game incoming to PS4 and PS5 in 2023, I (Colin) thought I'd bring Vince back into the fold to discuss new developments. After all, the entire roster has leaked, it seems like there are going to be some new modes, the franchise is returning to cross-platform status, it's moving engines, and even its control scheme was temporarily controversial (though those fires have since gone out). With Capcom financially stronger than it has literally ever been, Street Fighter 6 promises to be a high-quality, expensive, and well-executed fighting game. All we're left to do in between now and launch is analyze and hypothesize, and we do both in great quantities right here.

Good episode but I’ve got a couple of corrections: 1. Akuma originally appeared in Super SF 2 Turbo as a secret boss/unlockable character. Generally considered one of the most broken characters in fighting games he is banned from tournaments. 2. Luke and Marisa don’t appear to be boxers. Luke is an MMA fighter and my take on Marisa is that she does some sort of wrestling/MMA as well, but we don’t know for sure yet. 3. Speaking of boxers, Ed is not a charge character. He has a unique moveset specifically designed for new players that includes mashing punches and pressing a direction and/or 2 buttons to do his specials. He also uses his feet for kicks so kind of unique for a “boxer”. Balrog is a charge character as you hold back/down then hit forward/up + a button to do some of his specials. Edit (I finally finished the episode): 4. Guilty Gear Strive’s latest patch is actually being received positively as far as I can tell. The power levels of several characters have gone up and made them more fun to play.

Great episode so far. I love it when Vince shows up to talk fighting games. I suck at them but I love playing them because of the art style and community

A full episode on Street Fighter? That’s awesome. Now I have a reason to go to the gym.

Love Vince’s positivity and engagement with fighting games. This little team of analysts you’re building is incredible.

Always rooting for Vince. Deserves to be back in the industry.

I absolutely love listening to Vince get nerdy about fighting games. When I was younger, it was probably my favorite genre but similar to you, Colin, once everything went 3D I slowly fell off. I'll still play against the AI for the story mode and fight towers in Mortal Kombat but I don't even try to play online after getting absolutely owned in Street Fighter 4 on PS3 for like two hours straight in like 2009 lol.

Josh Gamez

You'd think they'd be super toxic but from what Ive seen on Twitter, Reddit and Twitch it's actually pretty wholesome lol

I will say the simple mode actually removes some of your options. You don't have the full suite of moves a character normally had access to. Alos thanks for the episode really need it today to get through my job.

I liked SFIV, I thought it did a good balance of using 3D models to feel like flat sprites. It was also full of classic characters. V is less good, it looks clearly 3D. I don’t understand why developers don’t go back to sprites occasionally just to mix it up? Are sprites just completely dead for big fighting games? Why? Also I think there are way too many new characters in each iteration. Street Fighter has over 100 legacy characters now, they really don’t need new ones. Bring back some lesser known characters.

it is a matter of cost - sprites in a fighting game are extremely difficult vs the freedom you have with 3d models and camera movement. It does suck but I'm afraid that in terms of style we peaked at Arc Sys level

Rich Price

I thought it was cost, but surely technology can help simplify it (I say that as someone who knows literally nothing about game development). Also if anyone can afford to do it’s Capcom. I appreciate it would sacrifice any kind of dynamic camera movement, but I bet loads of people would love it. I just think Street Fighter deserves better. Persona 4 Arena is full sprites and looks incredible, it will still look incredible in 10 years.

Thanks for giving Vince a shout Colin….. your doing amazing work and is appreciated by many 👍

Yeah, I just can't do 3D fighters. There were a few I liked in passing, like the original Power Stone and the original SoulCal... but generally speaking, it's not for me.

LastStandMedia

I remember liking the aesthetic of IV, considering its time period and expectations of something 'new.' I feel like it's gone overboard since.

I’m really disappointed they shafted Laura from SF5. Brazil is such an important nation in contemporary martial arts, with Brazilian jiu-jitsu and vale tudo shaping the MMA landscape. Instead they went with Blanka! Blanka?! What is he even to represent? Laura typified Brazil perfectly.

That’s it, I’m joining rageaholics!

People in Brasil usually can’t even pronounce Sean.
