Spider-Man 2 | KnockBack: The Retro and Nostalgia Podcast Episode 222

At first blush, Sam Raimi wasn't a natural fit to direct a Spider-Man film, and yet his 2002 entry into the series did awesome at the box office and is much-beloved to this day. Two years later, he -- along with Tobey Mcguire, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, and others -- delivered Spider-Man 2, an even better film than the original that builds wonderfully on its themes, characters, and world. Spider-Man 2 also introduces an iconic villain in the form of Alfred Molina's Dr. Octopus, who many Spidey fans were glad to see reemerge, at least in passing, in the MCU. Made for an exorbitant amount of money even then ($200 million) and earning an obscene amount of profit (some four times its cost), Spider-Man 2 is still one of the most beloved superhero films ever, even if it hails from an era when the genre wasn't so well-worn and readily-accepted. So join us as we gush over and celebrate Spider-Man 2, and remember: With great power comes great responsibility... fair or not.

Colin, was not expecting a shout-out to my hometown when talking about a homeless person's shopping cart full of extremities haha.

It’d be even more horrifying if the doctor put the thermometer up his ass first, then up yours afterwards

Great episode, loved listening to it. I just wanna say, in regards to Maguire possibly not coming back for the sequel, his side of the story is that he hurt his back while filming Seabiscuit and the first Spider-Man movie, and was concerned about how the stunts in the sequel would affect his health, (which is why we got the 'my back' joke when he falls off a rooftop) and that the studio was ready to replace him if he didn't get better in time. His side seems a bit more believable to me, considering that Raimi had nothing but kind words to say about working with him, even when it came to stunts.

I wish I didn't miss the question submissions because I would mention I saw this movie for the first time on my PSP from the pack in UMD of the movie. Amazing even on that tiny screen!

Colin cracked me up at the end criticizing the theme of Peters responsibility, how Peter lost his job bc he was late delivering pizza. If I ever see a spiderman movie where spiderman lets a kid get pancaked by a truck because people need their pizzas I’m walking out of the movie haha

I loved this episode, but Colin, my brother in Christ, if you mention Mr Sinister as a Spider-man villain one more time! Mr Sinister is an X-Men villain and has never been in the Sinister Six and has only had brief brushes with Spider-man
