The Embracer Group's appetite for developers cannot be satiated. The never-ending expansion of what is rapidly becoming gaming's largest publishing entity has gobbled up three more studios from rival Square Enix (as well as a bunch of IP) for cash money. Does this say anything about Embracer? Probably not. It seems like they'll buy just about anything, and $300 million is a small price to pay for more than 1,000 heads and 50 licenses, including Tomb Raider. This deal does, however, say something about Square Enix. Potentially many things, in fact. Refocused on western second party relationships and Japanese internal development, some think Square Enix is trimming the fat to be purchased itself. But does that make sense? We discuss this deal extensively. Other news this week include rumblings of a takeover at Ubisoft, the leak of some of PlayStation Plus' upcoming retro games, the surprising lawsuit that potentially puts Yuji Naka's epic failure Balan Wonderworld in context, and more. As always, we touch on plenty of listener inquiries too, including ones about Reggie Fils-Aime, a potential sequel to Death Stranding, the likelihood a Punisher game might someday appear, and so on. We're back in the saddle after a very successful 200th episode, and we hope you enjoy.

Mafia Definitive Edition is excellent. We need more of these

Another great episode. Thanks guys! Re: NHL does have ads on the players helmets, I believe as of this year (or last season). Prepare for next season when the ads start showing up on the players jersey. Colin, sorry for your Isles missing the playoffs. You’re free to hop on the bandwagon to cheer for my team? Go Leafs go!

If Square Enix and Koei Tecmo join together they could become SEKT and that seems like a good name for a group.

Worth noting that the majority of F2P game income comes from like 10-15% of its user base. That 10-15% spend absurd amounts of money that supplement what the other players aren't paying and then some. So it's still the players fault I guess but moreso the fault of a minority with either a lot of expendable income, no concept of cost (like children), or the physiologically ensnared that can't help themselves.

Joe

It lost money, you can't have a movie cost $200m and only make $339m. The rule of thumb to break even is 2.5x the production budget, it didn't even get close to breaking even, let alone making a profit.

LastStandMedia

2.5x is not the standard. I'm not really arguing with you one way or another; I'm sure they would have made a sequel if the actor was interested.

Joe

My dude, I literally work in the industry, I know the movie lost money for a fact. Talk to anyone who works in the film business and they will tell you that a $200m only making $339m is terrible and at least a $100 million write down for the studio. It doesn't matter if the actor was interested or not, if the movie didn't flop, they would have made another one either with another actor or a reboot. There is a reason Prince of Persia is still dead in the age of reboots and revivals.

I'd love to hear Reggie F.A. on an episode of Knockback and what questions Colin and Dagan would come up with

Henry Morgan

I never knew Dustin and I had such similar music tastes! Love both Pet Sounds and John Denver (and a massive Beatles fan of course)

Dustin, stand down on the Steam Deck email follow up. I’ve been waiting over a year for my follow up. XD
