In The Name Of Physical Games | Defining Duke Ultimate Episode 66

In a sobering conversation, Matty and Cog talk about the direction our industry is trending in. Standing on the edge of the abyss, we talk about the AAA power players who are shaking off traditional game development as they chase down the likes of blockchain gaming. With NPD data showing that physical game collecting is now a niche thing even in brand new releases, are people like Matty just old people shouting at clouds?

I'd be listening now if I didn't leave my headphones at home 😒

Paladins? Pretty sure that’s the game matty’s talking about

I was thinking that or Paragon. But I don't think either were xbox exclusive.

Great episode boys! I worked as a manager at GameStop many years ago and loved working those midnight launch events. Plenty of fond memories from those days.

Let me tell you, I'm more and more engage with these DDU. This topic was very dear to me, as I've gone through the same ordeal as Cog between digital and physical! I chose the digital route, but I'm still sad about some game I can't play easily. Also, The Freelancing debate DDU was a great one! Good job Dukes!

my very last midnight launch was the Switch launch. so i guess technically my last midnight launch was BotW. but my last standard release midnight launch was Fallout 4. i wasn't buying because i had the pipboy collectors reserved through amazon, but i went to gamestop just to experience the launch. that was a good day.

Best episode yet! I have gone completely digital, but this episode really made me reconsider. That final speech was awesome Matty. Keep up the great work gents.

I definitely miss the novelty of physical game discs and owning the game case. So many cool game art covers, back covers and game manuals. They meant so much as a kid. I also loved midnight launches - last big one for me was Call of Duty: Black Ops II. But these days, discs are inconvenient and all the novelty of looking at game art is covered by online trailers, website promo art and wallpapers. There IS still something cool about owning physical game media, but I do think owning the digital copy is much easier and convenient. But like you've said, there are potential pitfalls with an all digital future. We shall see...
