How Does The Washington Post Cover Games? | Sacred Symbols+ Episode 184

If you're American, you know all about The Washington Post. Behind The New York Times, it's the country's most prolific and most-read newspaper, and in recent years it's made a notable attempt to get into proper games coverage. At the tip of the spear is a veteran reporter named Gene Park, who was kind enough to join me (Colin!) on this episode of Sacred Symbols+. Like me, Gene went to college for something other than journalism, yet found himself in the journalistic space anyway. Our conversation touches on quite a few interesting topics for those keen to learn how the sausage gets made, from WaPo's intentions in the gaming space to the influence of having a billionaire owner, from watching talent scurry from mastheads to the political bias built-in at the very foundation of modern American journalism. You'll find our conversation candid, deep, and particularly timely, especially considering the dumpster fire so much of the media landscape is today. Can we chart a different direction? You'll be pleased to learn that there are good and honest people trying to make change. Follow Gene Park on Twitter: https://twitter.com/GenePark

Loved the show guys! Fuck the hate, it means you're doing something big, right, different (indifferent?) and frankly, ignoring them is making them weaker. Lot of love for you guys and the community we all have here. Keep up the good vibes and content, as it speaks for itself and why you guys at LSM have the largest gaming Patreon.

Excellent episode. Gene was great. I've given him a follow on Twitter and it has been sad to see the response from some narrow-minded individuals. I do hope we see him back on this side of the fence but I'll be following his work nonetheless. Keep up the great work, you're smashing it.

This was so good. Hard not to imagine you punching the air once the call ended, Colin. Keep up the great work. Hopefully we will see Gene on again soon. Top lad.

Such an interesting story and person, decided to give this a full watch after seeing some of the pathetic backlash on Twitter, what a wholesome man, wished him the best in a tweet!

Phillip

Great episode. Colin you killing it. You are the goat

I don't know why I continue to be surprised when guests receive backlash for being on the show. But, somehow, I'm surprised every time. It just so illogical.

Fantastic episode - exciting to think about the way people talk about and think about games has and will continue to change as lifelong gamers grow older and the medium is thought of as something for everyone, not just for kids/neckbeards

Man I really think twitter is the most toxic platform out there and just glancing thru the backlash this dude got for coming on the show solidifies that idea even more to me. Great episode as always :)

Great episode

Really great conversation. Thank you both for everything that you do - Proud patron for this content, Colin.

Hey everyone it’s Gene park here. Just wanted to express my appreciation for everyone listening and supporting me. I will always, ALWAYS defend the audience here as good people, as evidenced by the kindness you’ve shown me all and how many members of the community conduct themselves outside too. As a journalist of 20 years I’ve found that one of the dumbest mistakes we make in the media is to somehow blame our audience and our readers. That is a fast track to making yourself obsolete. You guys are great and the last thing anyone should do is paint any of you in broad strokes. See you all online and thanks again.

This was a great conversation. I really hope to see Gene back on the podcast in the future. It sucks to see he’s had some backlash for being on the show, but he seems like the kind of guy who does his own thing regardless of reception.
