Long has it been requested that we host a special on Sea Of Thieves and, today, we are finally doing just that. Joining me (Matty) is our associate producer Ben Smith who among many other things he is amazing at is an expert on one of Xbox's most successful service games to date. Since the announcement of Xbox Game Pass, Sea Of Thieves has only gained steam where five years after launch in 2022 it is in its best state yet. Why is that and should you dive deep? Let's turn to Ben and find out.

Gonna be a skip from me lads, game is just not very good.

Ben Smith

This comment is exactly why Matty wanted to make this episode. You may not like it, and that's certainly fine, but you can't just dismiss one of Xbox's most successful games as "not very good" when millions of people are playing it, enjoying it, and it is getting higher player counts on Steam than other, more mainstream Microsoft titles. -Ben

It's always nice to hear from the mayor!

Jamie Anderson

Millions have tried it, millions aren't playing it. Looking at steam the last 30 days saw an average of 16k players daily. On xbox its outside gamepass top 10 most played. And sits at #87 xboxs top paid games. So i have no idea where you are getting this millions are playing it from. The game is not very good lets not pretend the dukes don't over hype xbox games. Also i can't dismiss it because millions play it, millions play CoD and those haven't been good in years.

Hey Ben why is north west such an issue for cannon play?

Ben Smith

It's just the way the waves move in the game (probably emulating a tide) and how it makes your ship move more erratically. You can't keep cannon shots steady if the ship isn't maintaining a steady bearing! -Ben

While I’m not that into this game, it’s great seeing one of Xbox’s surprise hits getting a spotlight here. This made me actually want to give it a go again. Hope we get more content like this, would love one on the Ori games one day.

Im not interested in SOT at all but this is hugely downplaying its longevity and staying power. The games outlasted supposedly better and more popular games that came after it.

So sea of thieves is one of my favorite games. I'm at about 1200 hours and my wife is about 1k in. The pirates life tall tale set was my "goty" last year. The "endgame" esque moment during the 5th tale tall blew my mind. I literally jumped put of my chair. And even with flamehearts removal there is just of much to do in this game right now. But Ben is right, people either love or hate this game. It's not for everyone. I actually have a feeling this game is partly responsible for sony wanting bunjie. They saw how much money a love service game just prints for msoft and wanted one of their own. With xbox's new apperent "rule" of live service games being multi (cod, overwatch etc) I wonder if we will every see sea of thieves on Playstation?
